Do you remember: "Have-a-Smoke"...the dancing shoe shine man who posted up each day in front of Fletcher Cathey's furniture store, "Freight Train" Wilson and his little brother, Eddie, "Freight Train" winning the Noel Ball Talent contest and going to Nashville to appear on the Noel Ball show, "Goat Man", "Freight Train" running for Constable and winning, Franklin/Delano/and Roosevelt...the triplets, Joe Cannon the jet pilot who put L'burg into chaos one day, the blind, black man who could wear out a piano, Joe Wilson's Texaco station...the political hub for Democrats where all candidates and office holders came to be bowed down to, Old(respectfully used) Goat Sweeny and Little Goat, his son...regular fixtures at Joe's Texaco...humor knew no bounds when they were around, and the greatest story ever told, that of Julia Green Berryberry and her beloved son, Junior? I have a hundred or more not covered yet.

Thank you! I hope that people down there see the possibilities in this thread...where we can, over time, pull precious memories from each of our treasure chests and post them here in one big treasure chest for current and future generations to see history played back. History includes people, places, things and events and the ALL IMPORTANT STORIES that knit them together into a precious gift for those who are to come. I just hope that this thread is done respectfully and escapes the negative things seen on others.

Yep, their last name was Rutledge. Speaking of Wilson's Texaco, lets not forget Ronald Greer. Aah, the "Poor House" farm... Dad carried us by there several times and said we might have to live there. The trains---Passenger trains were the Pan American and the Hummingbird. Freight trains' puffing black smoke could be seen on the horizon as they came into town. Mama would yell for me to help get her clothes in off the line before soot came and settled all over them. I have some dandy stories involving George(The Chief) and Red Baxter, his brother. Most folks today might not understand the milk trucks...not just a truck that ran routes out to the farms and back to town delivering raw milk, but a mode of transportation for some rural folks to catch a ride to town to trade chickens and eggs for sugar and flour. Back then, I dreamed of being a snatcher on a milktruck. They were always on time..."It 6:30 a.m., Dad would say. "There goes the milk truck by." I believe his name was Mr. Cunningham. How about Waymon Harmon---the Ice Man? Twice a week made his routes. Brought the ice into the house and placed in the icebox for you...that's customer service of old! How about Nemmy Caughran's(not sure of spelling here)rolling store?...up and down every hill and holler, blowing his horn to announce his presence.

I had friends who owned Poor House Farm before moving back up north. Mint was growing along the creek. I was told that the place used to have a dairy or it was just for the people who lived there.
I haven't been here nor went to school here so I really would enjoy reading what you folks have to say. I love history.

The County owned the Poor house farm a big house and a bunch of small houses
Then it was sold to the Pyles I think
Cornbread did you know B Ann.
You build a milk scaffel and put your milk cans on it may be 2 to 6 and the truck would come by and the snatcher would grab them some times never stop
Stack them in the truck he ride in the back
Remember ration coupons during the war
wasn't Mr. Sharp and Mr. Wilson in charge of that
That was in the 40's
I'm I that old LOL

If a man wanted to check up on the news or get a haicut, he'd head to one of the local barber shops. Some of the well known barbers were: Tell Fowler, Bill Ledbetter, Mirt Grissom, Terrapin Hardison and Frank Eppersen. Mr Eppersen was in a basement shop below 1st National Bank and cut my hair the first time and for several years. He'd slap that wooden board across the arms of the barber chair for me to sit on. Once, when finished, he brought out a tall bottle of green liquid and asked if I wanted some "grown up" good smelling stuff splashed on my hair. Said Daddy and big men get it. I said yes. After applying the "green stuuff" he asked, "Do you know what that is?" I said no. "It's rooster pee!," he replied. I fled up those steps out and across through the 1st floor of the courthouse and into Cathey's furniture store, yelling to Dad that Mr. Eppersen had put rooster pee on me. Dad, Wallace Cathey and J,B, Richardson rolled in laughter.

I remember when Bordens plant was just off the square. My daddy worked there and every night(he worked 2nd shift) my daddy would bring me and my brother a pint of chocolate milk and strawberry milk which was my favorite. Those were the days. We weren't even in school yet. Great memories!

Friend,
I knew the Jones family that owned it. I am not too sure if Dr. Lewis owned it or what but the Jones family had praises for the Lewis family.

Above, I meant--- the greatest story in L'burg as having been that of Julia Green Derryberry and the love and devotion she gave to her son, Junior. Does anyone know if she is still alive? I submitted a letter, years ago, to The Tribune there and received great response from all over...what a wonderful tribute to such a deserving mother. I was able to come down and visit with her some for a couple of years. If I were a rich man, I would pay for a statue to be made of her likeness and place it at Lone Oak overlooking Junior's final resting place.
Wonderful

I don't believe Ms. Julia is still alive. She was a wonderful lady. Went to her son's grave at least twice a day and walked to Lone Oak even in her eighties. My father would pick her up anytime he saw her walking and take her home to the Summitt. My father told me about her and another story you might not know about her...she was supposed to be a passenger on the Titanic when she was a small girl but fell ill so she wasn't permitted to board. I will ask my father what year she died and post back tomorrow.

Thank you for posting such a positive thread.

I remember going to the theater on the square to watch the Smurfs movie and then going to Alford's to drink a real Cherry Coke on the little stools that twirled around.

What was Holly Grove Rd like in 1950? Was it a Catholic neighborhood? Years ago, a man came to my house looking for Malone family. He was planning a Class Reunion. I found a head of a Virgin Mary in one of my gardens.
