Inmate Death at Lewisburg Penitentiary

If lewisburg prison houses some of americas worst criminals,then why dosent lewisburg staff starting at the top, too the least be the best.
being confined in prison does not become a death sentance.
who is watching the watchers.
and when do they receive punishment for their crimes?

I am not suprised of the story of inmates being killed by their watchers. Currently, I have a family member who is housed in the Lewisburg Penitentary and he has reported that there is a hunger strike taking place that began on Thursday 3/5/09 and will continue until next week. They are striking because their Constitutional Rights are being violated. They are only allowing them 2 calls a month, they are trashing their mail, turning off the lights at 10pm, they have taken away all of their comestic products and vitamins and stripped them of their only source of news which is the radio. The criminals are really the Correctional Officers/Guards themselves. They are some sick vision minded animals.

The general public dosen't care about the abuse of the inmates. Not until it is your loved one in there. They treat the men like animals and no one is held acountable. It is a shame. You cannot just do your time and go home. They will set you up to be killed. How is it that they are putting men who are supposed to be segregated together and then turning their backs when they know what will happen. They are playing gladiators and I hope that they all get their just reward some day.

My loved one was transferred to Lewisburg the beginning of April and did participate in the Hunger Strike. He has shared the horrors going on at Lewisburg with me, and the obvious treatment of inmates as though they were sub-human. He is locked doen 23-24 hours per day ; no opportunity for hygeine products, no radio, no earplugs, no t.v. and faced with literal chaos; screaming, feces being thrown about, a badly-planned program which gives officials the right to arbitrarily knock an inmate down to begin step one, making it of indeterminant length, rather than the 18-24 month they presented to congress. This S.M.U. program will end in an aggresive crescendo of violence and death. I wrote to Senator Casey from Pennsylvania, sent letters to major newspapers' editorials, and to Caliofornia senators. As prisons go, goes our society. How can we wake up America?

i feel sorry for the inmates in any prison, however these people have been convicted of a crime, and i feel like maybe when they diden't respect the laws of the land, they gave up the respect and rights that we as tax paying citizens should give to them . some of the crimes are heinous and they gave no thought to the victim. so perhaps they deserve what they get.

You have no idea what some of these inmates can do and what they actually do to the guards. I worked there for several years!!! Until you have experienced this, maybe you should actually spend time in the prison!!!!

My boyfriend is incarcerated there,he has had all toiletries,and most personal belongings removed..locked down 23 0r more hours a day..only allowed to shower 3 times a week !They know they did wrong by themselves,their family and some have done very bad things..but treat them like ANIMALS...they will act like ANIMALS.!I don't doubt for one moment there are men who cannot be helped,but there are genuine ones like mine who want to get it over with as quietly as possible and return to their loved ones and society..EVEN IVAN MILLAT gets tv,and showers here in AUSTRALIA and my man can't even call me for another 7 months !! It's heartbreaking..

These inmates were transferred to this institution for not behaving in a regular prison. Hence the "Special Management Unit". This is not a place that just the regular off the street thug goes. These inmates have a history of assaulting staff, and other inmates, and violent histories while confined. These are the ones that start riots/disturbances, and hardcore gangbangers that control prisons, and the inmates that can't be housed with other inmates. Check the facts before the trash talking starts. They are treated the safest way possible for the staff to go home at night to their families. These inmates make weapons out of the simplest little things such as magazines or even newspapers. They won their trip to this joint by raising hell where they were before. What goes around comes around.

My heart pumps purple pi## for your loved one. When he gets out, be sure to inform him that if he'll cut the crap, obey the laws, he wont have to go back to the pig sty.

I tank you for your no nonsense and informative comments..and i do understand the safety issues if prison officers,i just think that Emotions get in the way when someone u care about is in there..It does'nt seem that this is helping at all..in the end u will be releasing agressive,emotionally starved felons who have had NO help in changing their way of thinking and feeling..the Kneejerk violent reactions that got them in there in the first place still simmers inside..Ther has to be more interaction with counsellors etc..

They still have access to the same therapy and behavioral programs, but for those that want to utilize it. Most of these inmates are beyond the point of repair. Most not all. Those who do program and remain out of trouble there will find their way out. But when other inmates act out, they lose respect when they don't assist or join in. Thus the cirlce just repeats itself. Unfortunately they choose to live like this. On top of all this is bragging right to their criminal resume. Being shipped to an SMU is a goal to a lot of inmates. Once again they made their bed, now they must sleep in it...

Ok Gia how would you handle the worst of America's convicted felons. The one's that have zero regard for human life. The kind of people that kill you just for looking at them wrong because it's a sign of disrespect.

Did you know to a lot of these criminals it is bragging rights getting sent to these units? Of course their not telling their loved ones that. But I guarantee the rest of his criminal career it will be #1 on his resume. When he transfers out of the SMU he will throw that around like he's the cream of the crop. The rude and insensitive individuals are the thugs locked up.

Do you not understand that they are put here because they can't play nice with other felons? So when they kill another felon or officer I guess that is ok in your eyes. As long as they aren't locked in a cell where they can't do it, because it makes them appear like an animal.

I think your a little out of touch with reality, or the understanding of the operation and purpose of these types of institutions.

I agree with you, they should not be treated the way they are. They should have been hung on the first Friday Morning after the day of their conviction. These are not the petty theives that are spending weekends in jail.

Inmates who are serving time in the Special Management Unit at USP Lewisburg are there quite frankly because they deserve to be there. They are management problems, and the goal is for them to learn how to behave and interact with others, not just staff, but other inmates as well. Right now, they don't know how to do that, or even if they do, they choose not to. This is an unacceptable way to go through life.
