Well put Lifer. Bottom line is that our elected officials are lazy, pathetic, clueless, old, tired, self centered, without drive, don't like change, and can't get anything accomplished that matters to the citizens of Lenoir! Why do we keep allowing this to go on? This thread has a great memory of what it was like 20 years ago with the mall. Can we come together here to list some current names involved in the decision making for our community...it would be interesting to compile the list of every official, with the salaries they make, to see how much time and money, we the people, have wasted on the election process, and where it has gotten us today. I'm frustrated and angry that we live in the past and remember when times were better. Looking foward to the future looks grim with these guys at the wheel. Caldwell County Lifer wrote: Hickory started to take off with the passage of liquor by the drink. After that passed, there became more and more resturants and places to shop in Hickory. Lenoir and Caldwell county residents took their money to these places in droves and thus began the demise of our mall. Our elected officals sat around oblivious as usual to how our economy was being undermined by the smart folks in Hickory. By the time our brillant leaders figured it all out the last nail was in the coffin for our mall. Lenoir then passed liquior by the drink and slowly the resturants came. But the HUGE lead Hickory had on Lenoir and Caldwell county in developing attractive venues for shoppers has been a nearly insurmountable challenge. What happened in the early 80's is very similar to what's going on today with Lenoir and the surrounding area. The residents all know what's wrong but the stupid leaders we have don't have a clue. Just like back then.

Gerri's delight was one of my favorite places to eat. I really miss that place. They had some of the best burgers and dogs in town and had been there probably since the mall opened at least you would think with all the original 70's decore lol.

As someone said earlier about a "spencers" Im pretty sure it wasn't spencers their was a Gag/magic trick shop but it wasn't spencers. All of the ones I can remember are already mentioned, Peanut Shack, I cant remember what was in the "new section that was built closer to woolworth on the left. I know a hair shack/ or hair cut place was at the end of that area. Someone mentioned Harris Teeter, worked there in HS thursday pay day and went straight to tape town/sound shop cant remember which at the time. Not sure if I miss the mall as much as I miss that time period when it was open.

one of the things i remember the most is on halloween the shops would have candy for trick or treating. Have some old vids of that. As a kid I was always amazed at the water system in the middle and how the water didnt spray everywhere.

The biggest problem the old mall had was weak anchor stores. Spainhours did not last very long at all and then the Woolworth chain went under all together. As long as Woolworth was still open the mall held its own but once it was gone and only Belk's remained as an anchor store it was doomed. If JC Penny had moved into there instead of Woolworth or Spainhours things would have been much different.

Would any of you consider going to a place that allows people to hang out and listen to music, play arcade games as well as consoles like playstation and xbox systems? I and six of my friends are trying to give Lenoir a place for people to hang out and have fun. We're willing to pay the high rent if people are willing to come and have fun. We'll also be selling videogames much cheaper than gamestop. We want to provide safe, wholesome fun for people our age, but we need to know that others want this. We're really excited and we're going tomorrow to speak with the owners of the mall about renting a shop area. I remember walking around the mall as a kid, back when there were still those last, hard to die stores. We want to restore our mall to the social center it used to be.
