Full story: El Paso Times

The state made nearly $58 million last year selling Texas drivers' personal information to commercial interests, but now lawmakers are to vote on a bill that would keep that same information about state employees secret.

How about protecting citizens information. So the state is making money from our personal information. We do not have a choice when we want to drive - the state should not release our information unless we authorize it. They need to pass a law more in line like the HIPPA law. Leave to the government to take advantage of information they have. If they are going to protect employees information, they should protect citizens information.

I am ok with this bill if all Texas Resident's dates of birth are kept private.
IF not then it is just not fair that I have to pay other people to protect themselves (through taxes) when my personal info is left dangling in the wind because my paycheck comes not from the great state of Texas.

All or nothing, everyone or no one that is.
Besides if there has been no case of ID theft from the info. sold to buyers then I don't see a problem except that I would appreciate a reduced fee for renewing my drivers lic. or at least a percentage of the profit made by DPS.
This could be a liability issue for DPS if the info. they sell becomes an ID theft problem, someone will make a lot of money on this and the lawyers even more.

Just wondering what the thinking is on this one. Why should state employees info be kept secret? Maybe just one clown wanting to protect his butt and throw everyone else to the dogs. Aren't politicians great?

It's just a smoke screen, this will not pass. If it did it would be challenged in court and the state would lose.
