I grew up in Sanford from the age of 9. It was nice little town for many years until the town let the Wal-Mart move in. After that the town exploded with smaller buisnesses. Too much traffic for the one horse town is a huge pain. The town itself is still nice, just too many people jammed into a small area. Thank your local councilmen for trying to expand too quickly. They can't reverse it now. As for the police, there are some BIG city issues going on in the town that SMALL city cops are not equip'ed or trained for.
I hope Sanford recovers but I cannot bring myself to return due to all the traffic.

The only thing that pisses me off, is when I'm in major pain. I go to the damn doctors and they give me a muscle relaxer. I BROKE MY HAND ASSHOLES! But they don't want to prescribe pain killers because the state is watching them and their every move. And they don't want to be the ones to be blamed if we become addicted. All I want is relief. I don't go to the ER for aspirin. Thats just feeding the problem. If Dr's won't prescribe it, people will get it off the street. Plain and simple.

Also, an ER Doc at Goodall tried telling me that toradol is the same as a narcotic. Narcotics don't do anything more. hahahahaha.......I ALMOST made him look stupid. He thought he could pull one over on us. Toradol is an NSAID like aspirin. It's just a more powerful asprin. It no way compares to vicodin, percocet, or oxycontin. I am going to report him for lying and deceiving us. Fuckhead. All hospitals suck now. They want their money and they want you out. They have their prescription pad ready and you're on your way. No need for x ray machines or ct scans anymore. They don't have time.

I'm reminded of a joke I heard a few years ago.

"Did you hear? Saco just got a new zoo!"

"Really?"

"Yeah, they put a fence around Biddeford!"

Sanford is a nice quiet town. Most of the trouble isn't the natives, like myself. It's the people who move here from other places. Most of Sanford's problems... Exist everywhere else. I see people bringing up very small instances of gangster-wannabes, firestarters, drug use, etc.

That's what you get when you have poorly-educated, poorly-disciplined people. I graduated from SHS with honors myself, without even trying all that hard. Could it use some improvement? Sure. What school couldn't? So many people are quick to jump on the "blame the school systems, blame the parents, blame the video games/television!" bandwagon as an explanation for irresponsibility. Personally, I believe in a couple of very, VERY important things: Conscience, Personal Morals, and Personal Accountability.

Nobody is forcing people to do the things they do. Often times it's because they're bored, misguided, or generally troubled.

And someone said something about bagging groceries: I've worked as a Hannaford employee a few years back. And part of my duties was bagging. I was taught better than to bag soaps and chemicals with food items. Yeah, alot of it IS common sense. My current job is the same way.

But hey, remember, alot of us are forced to hustle rather than take our time and do it right. Some people are naturally gifted at bagging groceries. Others not so much. The employees, however, aren't always paid the highest, treated the nicest, or even care about you as a person because if you're really going to raise such a stink about something like the way your groceries are bagged, and not politely remind them of their error, you can go to hell for all they/I care.

In close: Sanford isn't as bad as it gets. Alot of the things mentioned above are quite trivial in my eyes. Thank your stars for what we do have.

Well...now a Wal Mart Supercenter has opened lol And its packed. As for the town being to crunched. I dont think it is. I'm a firm believer progress and Sanford has been and will progress heavily in the down town area as they have plans to pour 50 million dollars into the mill aeas and pond area. Developers are all over those mills for development etc. As for the cops? Do you realize just "who" is on the force? There is several that "came" from big city forces and came here to raise their families in more controlled atmosphere. One in particular came from Los Angeles after being there infiltrating REAL gangs on their streets and not wanna be's. Sanford keep their parks etc VERY clean and its still a nice lil community :)

I agree with a lot said. We spent millions at the airport, and what do we have? Little airplanes fly in every now and then. What about this economic growth promised? What has this guy we pay $100,000 do for Sanford for "economic development?" Oh yes, we got applebees. wow!! 500,000 later for his salary and I can get the 2 for $20 special. We tore down a historical air tower to make room for "Oxford Aviation" who we spent tons of money on to have them say no thanks afetr spending our tax dollars to take down Oxford Aviation. What a waste!!

Oh yeah, we laid off a bunch of people to make sure this stuff at the airport happened. The deputy police chief with nearly 40 years, axed. The public education officer at the fire department, axed (should make those people who commented above about juvenile firesetters feel even better), laid off town office workers and more. Make sure the town manager gets his contractural raise though.

The cops think they are city cops. They are clueless, rude and often over react.

Suck it up - baby! wha wha wha - you broke your hand! Take a freaking tylenol!!! I've broken my leg and hip and didn't need narcotic painkillers. Sounds to me like you don't have a life, as most of the Sanford residents, so you sit around bitching instead of trying to change your life and that around you! You people piss me off! I wonder how you'd survive in Iraq? It's frustrating to know that good Americans are fighting those animals to protect whiny bitches like you!!!! Get a LIFE and get a JOB!!!!

Cudo's to you! Finally someone gets it! Where has personal accountability gone? I'm so tired of hearing everyone whine and complain! Bottom line- if you don't like YOUR life-CHANGE it! Why do people sit around and whine whine whine? What go is it doing.

The problem with the "lose" people in Sanford, and I'm talking about a relatively small portion, is that they are from generations of people who are content living on the state, not working, having children to raise their income, and creating another generation of "losers".

I know people have hard times, I'm all for "helping" out until they get back on their feet. I am NOT, however, in agreement with the system that allows and even encourages people to not work, have more kids and live off the state. But, is that the problem of the "losers" or is it a state and federal problem? I had a friend that lost their job and had to take a minimum wage job, lost her fiance, and was 8 months pregnant. She needed to find a place to live, and was actively searching for a better job. She went to the DHS to see about getting some temporary help so she could get on her feet. They actually told her that she would be better of NOT working, as they could give her a housing allowance, food stamps, unemployment, fuel assistance and when the baby came, she'd get more benefits, including free health care.

You tell me: who's the problem here? So is it really the "losers" of Sanford, or is it the ridiculous requirements of the assistant programs?
I continually hear people say "you can't change the system, so you may as well take advantage of it". That mentallity is the downfall of this city, county, state and country!

Anyway, like I said I'm with you, it's not Sanford, it's the generations of "losers" that continue to populate the city, who give nothing back, but suck it dry, who give Sanford a BAD name.

As a long time resident of Sanford who has also lived in other towns from Florida to Vermont, I have to say, this town does in fact have major problems and an apathetic town government. It's very hard to get a job at anything more than $8/hr. The police dept here doesn't have any respect for the average person. They see so many scumbbags on a daily basis that I think they now believe everyone is a scumbbag. There isn't anything to do in this town but drink and do drugs, so it's not really suprising the way the police are. Most of the neighbors in my area wouldn't give anyone else on the street the time of day.
The people who are saying that Sanford is as good or better than anywhere else are apparently blind. Or maybe it's a self defense mechanism to soothe your anger at not being able to move out of this hole.

What is up with you? Get off your high horse!!!-JMM

I see, you like getting told bad medical information from the 'professionals' at Goodall? I see why you like this town! ROFL

I had a doctor from Goodall Health Partners, that in the time period of 2 years, couldn't even get a simple hernia fixed. Same doctor wouldn't prescibe an antibiotic for a painful case of hidradenitis supportiva... I had to contact the last surgeon who did surgery on the resulting boils to get antibiotics (from York Hospital not Sanford!) You would have thought that I was asking for narcotics the way he acted! That isn't a high horse, that's my HEALTH I'm talking about (and Matt was talking about as well).

I've lived in 2 states, other than Maine. Every place I go has good and bad qualities. Sanford is not exempt from having its bad qualities. I'd like for this person to find a place that has no downfalls at all and let me know so I might consider moving there. I probably wouldn't though, because home is home. For those who are swearing and being rude....get better health insurance so you can go wherever you want (say, SMMC), get more educated so you can make more money and live away from the "ghettos" of Sanford (which is a joke...been to West Philly lately?), leave the hairdressers alone! gosh!

As a professional that has lived in Sanford for Three years now, I find nothing welcoming and inviting, mostly due to the seemingly negative and lazy attitudes of a quantity of residents here. I think it is right to say that the police do nothing for the town except flex their pathetic sleeves and pretend not to sell the drugs they confiscate. It also seems somewhat alarming that we have an saturated level of pathetic sex offenders per square mile. Check out www.city-data.com and find out just how depressed this city is. What it comes down to is that Sanford is affordable to low income people. This doesn't mean low income equals trash it means that there are those, especially in this town, that are low income because they can't get out of their own way and are limited by their drive to be anything more than they are. Sanford has a ton of potential but it starts with the people and I have my doubts that the people in this town want it to be any more than a cesspool of collected crap. Another item to point out is that Sanford, in relation to other towns in Maine, has a higher taxes yet judging by what I see, the town can't even wipe their own behinds, never mind filling a pothole correctly or maintain a sidewalk. I will move.
