Actually, Brother Hez is accurate on this point(by the way, why on this forum do we address people as brothers and sisters ?). However, if you read the water quality information on Lake Houston, you will find it is one of the cleanest in the state. You can safely eat fish from it at whatever interval you desire.
On the otherhand, the fish you purchase in grocery stores oftentimes have dangerous levels of mercury. Lakes located close ( close meaning fifty miles) to coal burning facilities generally have superhigh levels of mercury. Galveston Bay has borderline mercury levels and generally, Speckled Trout are not to be eaten. Although catfish are often consider bottom dwellers, those from local lakes contain almost no mercury. However, one of the most preferred fish in supermarkets, Orange Roughy, contain killer amounts of mercury. Unfortunately, there are no real standards placed on fish sold in supermarkets. I would be extremely hesitate of eating store bought catfish since much of it comes from Vietnam. |
