The Seneca Academy is the Seneca Nation’s first independent school for tribally enrolled students. The mission of the Seneca Academy is to provide a rich curriculum that embraces both Seneca and Western knowledge and understanding with the fundamental objective that young Seneca students will be empowered to assume the full responsibilities of citizenship in Seneca society and beyond. The school will cater to the learning style of Seneca children. Students will be taught to read and write in English and Seneca language. They will learn about the history, treaties, and culture of the Seneca Nation in addition to US social studies. The school will also provide an athletic program to educate students on the importance of physical activity and will include intramural sports teams. A unique feature of the Academy is the educational partnership established with Nichols School of Buffalo, New York, a premier independent college preparatory school. Whether Seneca children plan to attend college or not, the Nichols School partnership will assist in ensuring the highest quality educational opportunity. Two campuses will be available for students to attend, with one on each of the territories; Allegany and Cattaraugus. The school is planned to open in the fall of 2010.
The Board of Trustees meets the third Monday of every month 6:00 p.m. Location alternates between the SNI Cattaraugus Department of Education (Saylor Building) and Allegany Department of Education (Jo Jo Redeye Building). Come and join in the discussion.
