Hi. I'm from Lexington, KY and have never left the south in my 21 years of life. However, I am moving to Pittsburgh in 6 months and to me I'm sure it will be like a different country especially since we only have a population of 200 thousand. Anyway, I guess what I'm asking is; Whats it like in Pittsburgh?

www.post-gazette.com is the local liberal rag.
or for radio/tv stations try: www.state.pa.us then click on "media" link which gives a map of PA and click on the Pittsburgh area, which gives all radio/tv/newspapers. Then stay away. |

Maggz, I've lived here my whole 52 years. Almost everybody I know is a Republican and dislikes unions yet the Dem's win here..
There are a lot of car people here.. If you like old cars, check out the Wexford Starlight car cruise every Friday night in the summer... Even though we are in the north, I feel Pittsburgh is more like the south as far as church, work and family go. We still have old fashion cops here that keep everything in good order and that we support.. The G-20 was an excellent example.. Funny how the media didn't show the locals yelling at the oboma socialist trash.... Move to the subs like the North hills or South hills and you'll be good. Stay out of the city if you have a family and want to use a public school system... The city in nice if your single or without children... Good luck and welcome! |

Thanks everyone for your input it is much appreciated, and as far as the rednecks go I hate to say it because I loathe them so much down here but they will make me feel at home. Also, I'm looking enroll in school when I get up there, are there any good colleges to recommend? I'm not sure what I'll major in, here I was majoring in broadcast communications but due to the economy I decided against it.

Lol. Yes, I'm white, and I've been to Detroit once when I was in the military and that place scares me. |

University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University, Carnegie Mellon University, Robert Morris University..just to name a few schools located in or near to downtown Pittsburgh. California University of Pennsylvania is about an hour away. There's Washington & Jefferson College also. Schools? We have plenty! |

I'm a transplant from Virginia and Arizona. I like it here -- almost 14 years now and have no family within 6 hours driving distance. Well, I don't care much for the weather. Being in a computer tech field isn't a good place to be. But if you're a people person, there are many places to find yourself an instant "family".
As for Lawrenceville Guy's comments about Republicans & Unions: This is a very big union town - not just in current members but in descendents of union'ers. I watched this smart-@ss 'publikan spout off against unions in front of lifelong, multi-generational union guys. That smart-@ss, who is a regular member of this group, nearly got crushed by the one who's the biggest teddy bear of them all. Be smart about what you say to whom. If you're lucky, someone will pull you aside and let you know when you've crossed a line. Bottom line ... it's worth a try. Good schools. Cost of living is more reasonable than most. And, as was already pointed out ... the Black & Gold thing will catch ahold of you and next thing you know you'll be cheering on dem Stillers when you go dahntahn! Good luck to you! |

1 You're surprised just because everyone YOU know is Republican and yet the Democrats still win the elections? That speaks volumes about what you don't know or simply can't understand about this city, son: we're Democrats, and we don't like the mean-spirited, anti-American, "I got-mine,-so-screw-you" menatlity of the Republican Party. So take you own advice and move to the Burbs, bub! |
