All I can say is that anyone is looking for great floral service - just head to Patty's Floral Design in Kaimuki or St. Louis Florist on McCully. St. Louis is good because they can ship to the mainland, Patty's does not ship outside of Hawaii but they recommended St. Louis Florist and I have never had any problems with either ones. I remember a few that I won't mention but after delivery, the flowers were either drooping or close to being dead.
And yes, at St. Louis Florist - just ask for Mona. Patty's on Waialae and 3rd is really great as well - just ask for Patty.
Do not omit Kailua Florist and "T" for the freshest lei's shipped to the Mainland.
I also remember the lei stands on the way to the airport. |
Yes, but Mona at St. Louis Florist ships out the best variety as well as prices for a super arrangement of anthuriums. I keep telling Mona that I don't know how she can make any money for what she charges. But any out of towners - when you do visit the islands - drop in to your usual florist and take them a little box of dim sum just to say thanks!! |
economic necessity now dictates what is used to make lei. Money leis have the longest life in hand, unless you have bills to pay

What about the lei stands on O`ahu? I was in line last weekend at one and business seemed to be booming. It was graduation weekend, Kamehameha Alumni Lu`au and so much more. While I truly do feel for the florists in the article, are they a true measure of what's going on with lei stands all around the islands, or is this another article meant to tell us how bad things are...as if we don't already know.

Kind of late waking up.

JENNY'S near Maunakea has been a staple for me when lei are needed.

The reason for getting their flowers outside of Hawaii is also because there aren't as many farms as they used to be. The good florists around town will be very much upfront with their customers and tell them where the flowers are coming from. Most popular are the roses and they are not coming in from Thailand. It is the sign of the times, just as those once overflowing pineapple fields - remember those days? And by the way, every florist everywhere, not just in Hawaii is getting their floral products outside of the U.S. When you see all those parade floats, whether it be in Hawaii or in CA at the Rose Bowl, a huge majority of those flowers are coming in outside of the U.S. |

1 Eh, locals gotta go where the money is. I took leis to L.A. for my nephew's graduation and the people there flipped when I told them how much I paid. They paid 2-3 times more than what I bought my leis for in Chinatown and the leis on the mainland looked like cheapie stuff that tour companies hand out to arriving tourists. Simple single- strand orchid leis. There's money to be made on the mainland. They are getting into leis for graduation. |
I know what you are talking about. I have been to a few graduations up in CA in the past and I do see the quality of the leis up there as compared to the leis that the home folks hand carry up there. Big difference - real big difference. And yes, you cannot beat the leis you get from Chinatown. |

For fresh locally grown/purchaced flowers i'd highly recommend north shore buds & blooms. Awesome website and great floral designers.

Nonsense. Plastic ones are just as pretty and colorful plus you can go with the political flow and recycle them. Leave the flowers in the earth.
