Sound Off! (Nov. 7)

Full story: Las Cruces Sun-News

I hope the builders here in Las Cruces learn the message that they can give money to politicians, but they can't buy all the people.

"The governor is planning to increase taxes because the budget is so far behind. Yet Las Cruces is planning to move into a new City Hall with new office furniture worth more than $1 million."

The aristocracy need their castles and thrones. Let the peasants eat cake (rolls).

Many folks complained about the size and girth of the county government building. I myself,
called it "a casino" in appearance.

It does a good job now and will for the future.

The new city government building, while wildly big and admittedly out of place compared to everything except for the new federal courthouse....

it, too, will fit into place by visual familarity
and it's size and grandure, will soon be accepted.

Now a million bucks for ALL NEW furniture still takes some hard swallowing to get THAT pill down.

Oh, well.....onward through the fog

Why didn't the city road and county road departments pay attention to Union Avenue? It's in very bad condition, especially in front of the elementary school.-caller said.

This is your second Sound Off on this. Guess they didn't read the first one. The answer is because THEY don't use or live on Union Ave. Buy a truck with 6-ply tires and beef up the suspension.

I wonder why a city in southern New Mexico with no airport would invest in a convention center...
I wonder why our city's schools are run by a guy with little education and less insight...
I wonder why Republicans think that Obama is personally responsible for the overstrained military and health care system...
I wonder why congressmen and women don't have any morals or scruples or guilty consciences for getting rich under the guise of public servants...
get a clue

Wrong! It's because they're too busy taking care of those whiny folks that make what appears to be big-bucks here. They moan and groan to their Commissioner and/or Councilman that they have potholes and cracks on the roads in front of their lavish homes. Of course they remind them too how much money they gave to their election campaigns. Instead of blaming the departments, why not "ask" where the decisions to pave certain roads originated? The road departments don't make the decision as to what roads get paved or maintained.

As scary as your post is, the fact that you're right is what we all should be ashamed of. We all gripe and let everyone know how wrong we think this is, yet it continues and once it's all said and done - we accept it. Why is it that taxpayers voice their disapproval to our politicians, yet our voices go ignored? Why is it that we allow these politicians to continue doing opposite of what taxpayers want? Why is it that politicians state over and over during their campaigns that they'll do only what their constituents want - yet once elected they become deaf and dumb? Why is it that we have newsstations that report their illegal activities for the world to see, we all get upset when we learn the truth, yet nothing changes?

It appears I didn't connect enough dots for you. To presume the road crew decides willy-nilly where they're going to work each day is absurd. Turn up the voltage, you're usually brighter than that.

Its the silent majority voters they need to worry about. you might agree with them to thier face but when I get in the voting booth I remember all this and we are sick of it.

Codes enforcement were out on Saturday taking away yard sale signs. If the city is serious about recycling, yard sales are a wonderful way to keep things out of the landfill. They provide income and fun for large numbers of people. If left over signs are a problem, then change the code so signs are required to have an address. If they don't, codes enforcement could take those away. If still up on Monday, then citations could be issued. In these hard economic times, people need the extra income. Some people shop and resell to help make ends meet. Let's keep this country wide practice going.

Hmm...Codes must be bored! Why don't they get sent out to CLEAN up City and County properties that have weeds 10 ft. tall? Why not send them out to cut back some of the bushes and plants on corners that block our view of on coming traffic? Why not send them out to pick up trash along our hwys? Las Cruces has always looked like a dump so why is it that Yard sale signs are such a big dam deal? I've been a lot of places and the only thing worse to look at is a town torn apart by a tornado.

I think the order of events matters less than the fact that the players remain the same.

Anyone else notice the birthday announcement in Sunday's paper that included a commercial for a network pyramid opportunity? Slick, but the Sun-News should be a little more on the ball.

We are not building a Las Vegas or New Orleans kind of convention center you moron ... this is region convention center designed to
capture State of NM and regional conventions that we are currently losing due to Dickerson Auction Barn is a big turn off to state and regional convention promoters.

The AARP got a financial windfall in return for its support of the healthcare bill. Over the past decade, the AARP has morphed from an advocacy group to an insurance company (through its subsidiary company). It is one of the main suppliers of Medi-gap insurance, a high-cost, privately purchased coverage that picks up where Medicare leaves off. But President Bush-43 passed the Medicare Advantage program, which offered a subsidized, lower-cost alternative to Medi-gap. Under Medicare Advantage, the elderly get all the extra coverage they need plus coordinated, well-managed care, usually by the same physician. So more than 10 million seniors went with Medicare Advantage, cutting into AARP Medi-gap revenues.

Presto! Obama solved their problem. He eliminates subsidies for Medicare Advantage. The elderly will have to pay more for coverage under Medigap, but the AARP -- which supposedly represents them -- will make more money.

Daily Horoscope for November 29

Scorpio

You need to take time out to spend with your partner today as he/she probably has something they need to share with you. If you don't take the time now, while empathetic Neptune is stimulated by the caring Moon, you'll find that tomorrow won't go very smoothly. Take this opportunity to work things out, even if it's the last thing you want to do today. A little sacrifice is called for.
