No matter how many times you reject this idea that Hummer is talking about someone else will come back and parrot the same article. Hummer and his friends are about doing what ever it takes to defeat wildneress land protection. Hummer is a land grab carpet bagger who sees this open space as a means to profit using his real estate company. A few years ago a couple was able to keep everyone out of Soladad Canyon in the Organ Mountains by putting a fence across the road. They owned land 10 acreas of land on either side of the road and with that they closed the Canyon off to everyone else. After several law suits the gate was removed. As a real estate man Hummmer knows that if you control a few acreas on either side of a road leading to one of these proposed wildnerness sites you can control the whole area with that same locked gate. Understanding Hummer will alow for you to see he is intrested in only his own self intrest.

It is about time solid information is published. I commend Hummer for taking on the inviro zealots. As usual, the enviros will take on a personal attack strategy versus debating the points addressed in the editorial. If Hummer and other real estate professionals are more concerned about development over wilderness then why did he and the Chamber support designating the most prized land for development, the Organ Mountains area, for Wilderness? And calling for NCA designation of the Potrillos does not aid development, it stops it too but with one major exeption - the BORDER PATROL can ROUTINELY PATROL!

Hummer has too many fingers in too many pies to be able to present an honest view on any subject. Hummer is a corporate man. How about a list of all the memberships and positions he has developed since arriving in Las Cruces?

if Hummer replaced David Steinborn on the Forum. You know, that secret group of business 'leaders' who run Las Cruces. They don't allow reporters at their meetings with candidates running for local offices like when Mattiace was running for mayor. Did Miyagishima meet with them also? Is their rule:'Obey or be out of business?'

Even though Hummer might be a business man and looking out for his interests, the idea of shutting down the border can't be accomplished when government agencies work against each other. BLM is a joke! They prevent the patrol from doing their job and basically encourage these illegals to come over because they know where the BP can't go! We need to be able to protect our borders and that means effectively patrolling the border and responding to remote areas. How can we do that when the BP can't do either because of all the politics? New Mexico is called the land of enchantment..... tell me what is so enchanting or so worth protecting if there are garbage dumps in the middle of the desert from illegals crossing over? The BP shouldn't be driving all over the place and creating new trails everywhere, but if they need a new trail that will be more effective then so be it. They need to have the power to judge when and where they can drive to prevent this tsunami of illegals.

This is the most ignorant letter I ever read on border security and wilderness. It is clear that Wilderness designation for the Organ Mountains including Sierra de Las Uvas, Broad Canyon, Robledos and Greater Potrillo Mountain Areas will be a great benefit not only to the community but to the Border Patrol despite the dire warnings and ranting of a Mr Hummer's scare tactics letter. Wilderness designation for these wilderness areas will actually increase border security by preserving its rugged landscape as a barrier against illegal cross-border activity.

Mr. Hummer is simply regurgiating the bogus Wilderness Border and its Implications on American Security study that is simply an anti-wilderness document written by two anti-wilderness proponents of the People against Western Wilderness - sorry People for Preserving Western Heritage. There is not an original thought by Mr. Hummer. This group and Mr. Hummer would do anything to stop wilderness.

I wonder who the author of Jon Hummer's letter is? When he was on the panel at the Wilderness Hearing in Corbett Center, he barely could read his printed piece. Jon arrived in Las Cruces as CEO of Mtn. View then saw the "real estate boom" and knew he could make lots more money. Too bad-for Jon-that that market has leveled off. He and David Roewe- what an odd couple!

Based on Mr. Hummer's "flawless" logic on border security we should remove all housing and ranching on the border so border agents won't have any impediment to safeguarding the border. This would create a no man zone like in Korea between Mexico and US. However this ridiculous anti-wilderness letter implies this.

The Potrillos haven't been wilderness since the 1400's. WHy don't we make wilderness of mountain ranges in the Chihuahua desert that are wilderness? There is no shortage of them and they're far enough away from large populations that they are in little danger from folks wanting to check out the desert in their trucks on a saturday They can be larger in size. If the goal really is to preserve wild country it would make much more sense. Sadly, as a lefty and conservationist, I see the fact is that it's political on both sides and not at all concerned with the land or peoples enjoyment of it.

The Potrillo Mountains are unique and one of the largest undisturbed stretches of Chihuahuan Desert in New Mexico - is part of a volcanic field containing hundreds of cinder cones and large craters. The wildlife is outstanding and significant. Interestingly there is evidence of pre-Columbian Indian habitation - undisturbed. This should definitely should be designated Wilderness.

The Usual Suspects

Well, well, here we go again. The usual suspects attacking Hummer, Ranchers, Farmers, Business People and anyone who disagrees with their views. They attack their charachter without regard. They are angry, bitter people. Hummer has done more to support Las Cruces than any left wing enviromentalist can claim. It always amazes me at the vemen that is spewed. So if Hummer is an evil doer so too must Nathan Small. He came to town on a green horse and pushed his agenda. But that is ok because he is one of us, the enviro folks. Right? Keep tossing your vile as it only shows the true charachter of your associations with wilderness clan. You help clarify thier true charachter.
