My grandmother used to smack me all the time with a fly swatter. That and a wooden spoon.

That is why the butt has a lot of padding. I see a lot of kids who probably should have a fly swatter across their butt. No wonder kids are in control these days.

the last 3 posts are dead wrong! 3 YEARS OLD AND WELTS ON THE CHILDS BUTT, THAT'S JUST AS WORSE AS A WHIP. SMACK THE KID WITH YOUR HAND ON THE ASSS AND PUT HER IN HER ROOM AND LET HER CRY A WHILE.
AND YES, WORRY ABOUT FLY SWATTER WELTS ALONG WITH ALL THE OTHER KIDS GETTING ABUSED REGARDLESS OF THE OBJECT BEING USED TO BEAT A 3 YEAR OLD AND LEAVE MARKS!!!

A Flyswatter isn't that bad. the welts he left were. How hard was he hitting her with the fly swatter? At least it wasn't an electrical cord or something a lot heavier and she is still alive. All in all, she is not worse for the wear.

I too used to smack my kids with a fly swatter. BUT there is a big difference from being beat with one until it leaves whelps than it is just to be smacked.

my grandma too used to spank us with a flyswatter, woodenspoon, flipflop... whatever. she didn't hurt us just got the point across. there is a BIG difference in giving your kids a good "pop" on the a$$ and beating your kids to the point they have welts. some people take it way too far, i'm just thankful that the little 3 year old girl wasn't hurt too badly or to death like some of the stories you see on the news.

Most of you inbred morons just answered a lot of questions about the type of people that live here. So, it's alright to beat a child with an instrument? I now understand the need for forced sterilizations, you all make me sick. I would love to spend 15 minutes with each of you and this piece of human waste that harmed this child. I bet you mind it when I busted your a s s with a flyswatter I make in my garage. You sickening trash, you're probably the reason that the welfare rolls are so full now. Trash.

If a fly swatter made blisters, that was no swat.. That was abuse. If it leaves a mark, it's abuse. He must have really been swinging it hard and fast to make a blister. No 3 year old could possibly done anything bad enough to deserve being hit that hard.

Hitting a 3 yo child so hard that welts are left on the skin is way out of line. I was spanked growing up and NEVER had more than a red mark that went quickly went away. Furthermore, spanking a child that young is just plain WRONG. A swat on the behind, fully clothed, is enough to get their attention at that age. There is absolutely NO reason to inflict pain when disciplining -- at that age all it does is teach fear. I'm not against spanking per se, but it should not leave marks and not against a child too young to understand!

Hey, hey, hey. Jump back a bit. I said my Grandmother used to smack me with a flyswatter regularly. I didn't say I liked it, thought it was just A-OK, or felt I turned out okay anyway. My Grandmother was a mean old lady who abused me. She once kicked me across the kitchen floor. Not good at all.

In fact, I was physically and sexually abused as a child. My father left welts once so bad, I couldn't sit down for a week. No one noticed at school and I thought that's how kids lived. It wasn't the same type of spankings you hear about in abusive homes today. It was all under the guise of responsible child-rearing in the 60's. In spite of this, I managed to live a fairly responsible life, although I do have major issues with food consumption and lived from the age of 14 to 35 with a poor self-image. No, abuse is not okay.

As for the sexual abuse, that arose early and wasn't incestual. There was a neighbor..... As everything else in the 60's (way early 60's, I was 8) it was not spoken about. I've also managed to live with this and accept the decision to leave it be, right there under the rug. It's not easy.

I have a child who I began to raise as I was raised. It starts early. A little pop there on the butt, a little smackaroonie on the mouth, and before too long, you're smacking the kid around and scaring her to death. No, abuse is not good. So, I began to answer every question she had as best I could and explain to her why I said, "No." It seemed to work much better and thank God I was able to pull it off.

So, please. As with everything else, don't be so quick to judge, even out of decency, as you did. We're all just living as best we can. Some of us better than others.

Reasonable discipline is allowed under the law, and this includes corporal punishment that causes slight temporary bruising or red marks. It's hard to spank a kid and not leave some red mark, come on. Welt, could mean "red mark" here for all we know. The big question here is whether spanking akid is deserving of a 3 year stretch in prison and loss of constitutional rights. It's getting insane people, pretty soon you're all going to be criminals.

And come to think of it, what about the millions of innocents who are murdered everyday because of abortion? If everyoine wants to get up in arms, how about rallying around that issue? The world is crazy, upside down crazy.

A "welt" is a raised red mark. They don't go away that easily. Also with a welt there could be breaking of the skin. I remember being horrified one time when I spanked my son and it left a red mark. I swore I would never do that again and I haven't. However, I never spanked so hard that the skin broke or left a raised red mark. To be honest, kids that young have such sensitive skin that it is pretty easy to leave a welt. That makes it all the worse.

Yes. ALL abuse is wrong. Just because other children are beaten more severely does not make it okay to "mildly" abuse a child. What about psychological abuse? It can do just as much damage to a child, but no one ever sees a scar. Should we not care about that?

I guess you haven't heard the news: Abortion is LEGAL. According to the Supreme Court a woman has THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE. Your religious or moral beliefs do not supersede a woman's right to control her own body. Your religious or moral beliefs are not the legal basis upon which this country functions. Get over it.

wow, kind of harsh, but you are correct. A 3 year old can not behave badly enough to be spanked with anything that leaves a mark. and yes, I am 1 of 6 siblings and a father of 3 of my own children and never seen my parents or myself spanked a child and left a bruise. If you can't handle a 3 year old's temper tantrum or whatever without physically harming him/her, you shouldn't be in charge of one, period!

*LMAO* Again the state trying to take care of something instead of the real issues. Deal with the thousands of Mexicans coming here from AZ or how about the filth that runs the housing market in Alamogordo. Or how about you come here on vacation and leave on probation. A flyswatter. Mind your own biz NM! Yeah worry about how you are going to cover all the American;s here with health care. So many issues to many morons.

Hey buddie wait a minute. These are some pretty harsh comments. Yah I had my butt busted to the point were there were welts and you could not sit down for days growing up..and NO I did not like it. I really don't think any of us did growing up. And I have children of my own now and I would never think of doing such a thing to my child, no matter what they did. No kid deserves to be beatten at all no matter what their age is. A "pop" on the butt is good enough to get the point across when they get out of line. All I am saying is don't be too quick to judge.

Okay, where are you guys getting "welt" from. I read the article and is says BLISTERS, not welts. He hit her enough times and hard enough to leave blisters, not welts.
