I never disciplined my teenagers. They disciplined themselves. For example, they knew that missing curfew without a acceptable excuse meant restriction to the house for the following weekend.
Therefore, if they missed curfew they themselves "restricted themselves to the house". That was there decision. Not mine. Not society. It was their option and their decision. Responsibility and accountability.
My parents took this approach too. It worked great... for me! I made bad decisions. I broke curfew many times. It didn't matter because my punishment didn't matter. "There wasn't anything going on next weekend anyway." I lived for today and the thrill that today would bring.

Bottom line is, kids will make poor choices. It's our responsibility as adults and parents to make sure those poor choices are disciplined. We can't allow children who make poor choices to police themselves. It just doesn't work. Your children are the exception. Not the rule.

Hmmmm, I recall seeing several commercials not long ago where various "young adults" with cells texted one another at the appropriate time to start a...whatever it was they were starting.

Amazing.

The media puts those images in front of our kids daily, and then we wonder why those same kids act the way they do.

Not that what these girls did was acceptable, nor should they go without punishment, but I think the reaction was an overreaction.

That's because our society has become reactive instead of proactive.

For those that may have been wondering who writes a french fry, errrrr missile law. Obviously, the fair city of Laramie Wyoming did. Well, kind of. Here it is direct from the Laramie Wyoming Municipal Code:

Laramie, WY Municipal Code
Chapter 9.12 OFFENSES AGAINST PUBLIC DECENCY
9.12.240 Throwing stones.

No person shall, within the city, throw, hurl, thrust or in any manner propel any stone, stick or any missile, article or thing of any kind, character or description, at, upon, or toward any house, church, public or private building or at, upon, toward or against any telegraph or telephone post, pole, wire, machinery, fixture or appliance or at, upon, toward or against any electric lamp, light, wire, fixture, apparatus, machinery or appliances or at, upon, toward or against any person or any domestic animal or any vehicle, wagon or means of conveyance.(Prior code § 26-41).

Loads of codes!

And it'll only get worse since we're becoming a nanny country very quickly.

Every day I put up with the children who have left the public school system and are now in college. I wonder if most of them have ever been disciplined at home or in school.
They see nothing wrong with eating during lectures then throwing their garbage on the floor. Seems pretty harmless, right?
What about the many who don't see anything wrong with carrying a weapon on campus or smoking crack behind the bookstore?
If it takes using an adult law to get the attention of these children and their parents before their actions get to that point then so be it.
Someone needs to make children aware that there are rules they must abide by to get along in life.
The next law they test may have much harsher consequences.

Overreaction!

They did push it though. It reminds me of the incident in Calif somewheres where the girl threw cake on the ground during lunch, wouldn't pick it up, and was arrested.

I live in wyoming. My best friend's 8th grade sister was in the cafeteria at the time of the "fight", and when the principal spoke the warning a few days prior. He even told them everyone should have a food fight at sometime in his or her life, but during school was not the time or place. The cop told them they would be charged with "assualt and battery", so considering, I suppose the girls are lucky...but it seems to me to be a huge overreaction.

WOW!!!! Someone who can say that they know someone that was actually there. Speaking as a cop at a school, I would tell the Principal to pound sand and handle his own business. That is such a stretch of the law that the judge should not only toss out the case but sanction the officer for bring it into court in the first place.

It's easier, saves on thinking. "Easy Does It!" Now we are beginning to see the consequences.
