I guess they need more money. Seat belt laws are nothing more than governmental impositions on individual freedom, and also great little fundraisers since police can't get away with openly mugging people.

I seem to recall that the SP were crying because they were spread out too thin to patrol efficiently. But seems like plenty of manpower to run a sting operation.

Nanny-State legislation at its best!

Don't forget the traffic jams at the intersections while they are doing this!

1 If you really want less death on the road, we need to quit letting 16 and 17 year olds get behind the wheel. Something as unAmerican as seat-belt laws don't help with our road's death toll. |

I think the real purpose of seatbelt laws is to save tax dollars...accidents involving injury or death cost taxpayers more. We could force insurance companies to pay for emergency response teams, but then they'd just pass that added cost on to the consumer.

1 I don't buy that either. Regardless if the person was wearing a seatbelt or not, emergency reponse will be called just the same and that person will go to the hospital just the same. If anything, it seatbelts really do 'save lives', than a person who wears one is more likely to live so therefore, more likely to spend more time in the hospital and cost insurance more. A dead person isn't going to take a hospital bed for 10 days... so really... don't seatbelt laws cost more tax dollars? Not to mention the tax dollars wasted on the police time enforcing the law. |

I would love to see the age limit for driving raised to 18 myself. Anyone else want that too? |

1 I have three kids, none of them drove until they were 18. They thought I was a jerk then, but they understand now. My youngest is now 29. |

normally I agree with you, but this time I just cant. I am in favor of this. A simple act such as clicking your seatbelt can save your life. Not only that, but if everyone wore seatbelts insurance costs would go way down. |

the age of the person driving has very little to do with it. You would see just as many accidents if people couldnt drive until they were 40. Its about experience more than anything. |

1 That makes sense but I have to believe that maturity and the ability to make good choices has a play in it as well even if small. |

im sure it would help, but waiting till 18 or 21 could also cause problems. At 16 the children are still living at home, so the parents can supervise plus typically the children dont lead as busy of lives. Imagine an 18 year old moving out on his own, driving for the first time. Thats a lot of stuff to throw on someone all at the same time. |
Also all very valid points but also, when a 16 or 17 year old is at home but when he is out driving, it is not supervised (typically). And also, most 18 year olds are not moving out of the house and if they are, it's to a college campus where driving isn't really required. |

I am not against seat belts, but the laws forcing people to use them. And having worked for an auto insurance company for years, I know that they were very much for this legislation. But they aren't going to lower their premiums. I dont' think the law should be ruled by industry.
