But does anyone check the facts before printing news articles at the Star? This story says "Benjamin Kiphart, 36, a former Hancock County Jail Officer was approved bt the council Saturday to lead the force." The article continues, "The 1998 New Palestine High School graduate was chose..." I am not a math major, but this does not seem to add up correctly. Does this mean Mr. Kiphart was 26 or 27 years old when he graduated from high school? Or is he younger than 36 years old? Or maybe he graduated in 1990? If the details of a story appear to be incorrect, can we assume the major thrust of the story is correct? Do newspapers not have copy editors in 2007?

A 36 year old who graduated high school 9 years ago? Where is your copy editor? Does anyone check facts before going to press?

I think the fortville police department is crooked and they have nothing else better to do then to mess with people lives and harrasse people...
Fortville used to be a nice a decent place to live but since fortville is getting all crooked cops like Mr.Fox . the town of fortville has went down.. People does not like to come to a town where the cops like to harrasse people and makes peoples live a living hell.. I think the cops in fortville should be investigated... and if i have anything to do with it im going to try and get that to happen.. they need to stop worrying about people who go over the speed limit a few miles and start working on the crime .. Crime has went up cause the police department has nothing else better to do than to stop people who goes a few miles over the speed limit.. So if u have any question on how we can stop the cops harrassing people for no reason please feel free to contact me P.S Ingalls police is getting to be just as bad ahmleo69@yahoo.com |

I live in Fortville, and I haven't been harassed by any of the police. I usually go between 3-5 miles over the speed limit and have never had a problem. I don't notice a bunch of crime either. It appears that they are doing their jobs the way they are supposed to.

I like the story awhile back about the torch being passed from father to son at the cemetery
up there in forttucky....duh...guess that the residents dig it. yeah dudes, it is really the big time up there. next thing you know, there will be a huge shopping mall to replace the downtown area. of course let us not forget to have the council and commissioners put in a round about on main street.... thats good for the town.... |

Mr. Massey...lets see...you have been arrested by the Fortville Police and Ingalls Police for drving on a suspended license....you have been caught speeding not a few mile over the speed limit...more like 13 or greater...the police have dealt with you when you were drunk in public and they let you go home when you should have been arrested for it....your mother has been arrest for DUI...looks to me that your upset because you have been CAUGHT!!!!! The Fortville Police Department is not harassing people like you say they are...they get people like you off the streets...and crime has not gone up....you should do some research before you make comments like that...

Kasey,
You have no idea what you are talking about. My mother does not drink and i have never had a due. Im just saying that Forville and Ingalls police have nothing better to do than harrass people for going a bit over the speed limit or having their light out over the license plate. People that want to go out and have some fun in this town can not becuase they get harrassed. I can understand the people that are truly out of control. |

a lot of people are commenting on the situation in fortville. i was up there not too long ago and noticed police activity on 67 stopping someone who had been to the same party that i was at. no one was drinking, so the cops probably had to come up with something to ticket him with ....i believe that massey knows full well what he is talking about. furthermore i never thought that i would be reluctant to drive through fortville, but i am. if the cops stop you for suspecting that you might drink, the they will and can think of any reason to pull you over. and what is being done to alter this lowly state of i wear a badge and i can do what i want to do......

Ok, this is just a few pieces of information for those in Fortville who
somehow believe that the Fortville Police are crooked. Did you know that it is "NOT" entrapment for a police officer to sit in a parking lot of a drinking establishment? No, it's not! If you are going to repeat rumors and old wives tales, then make sure that are factual! A police officer in the state of Indiana may sit in a parking lot as long as he wants for any reason what so ever. It is a public parking lot!!! Now, if a police officer observes someone getting into their vehicle that "appears" to be intoxicated they are not allowed to let that person get behind the wheel of the vehicle and operate it. It is only entrapment if the officer gives you the alcoholic beverages and then gives you the keys to your vehicle and walks you to your vehicle. You (the bar goer) elect to drink on your own. No one is forcing you to consume intoxicating beverages! Grow up and take responsability for your actions! If you're not drunk then you won't to jail for d.w.i. Now for the public intoxication rumor. Ok, how many of you get boligerant when you drink, have bad balance, or maybe might make choices that you normally wouldn't. If an officer stops you because you appear to be intoxicated and you are not boligerant or show signs of very poor balance then you will usually get thanked for making a good decision to walk home and be on your way. Now do you realize that if a police officer in the state of Indiana stops a person that is intoxicated, wheather it be in a vehicle or on foot, the officer is putting his job on the line....his home....and everything else that he owns. I say this because if an officer stops you for d.w.i. and then decides to let you go and you go off and kill yourself or God forbid another innocent person, that officer is will be held accountable for that. So, when you are at work, do you follow the rules......if so, then why? Because you want to keep your job, ie income. So, that's why officer's do what they do. There are laws that they must enforce. Just another footnote......If you were a hunter would you go where you knew there were deer? If I were an officer I would go where the drunks were. Why not stop the tragedy before it happens? By the way, I am a vetran also. I educate myself on the law before I talk about it to others. So go to your local library or on the internet and educate yourself on the law. Don't take any angry person's version of the law because they have been "picked" on. I hope the Fortville Police put up record numbers this year on D.W.I.'s and I hope you're not one of them but if you are.....tough! Grow up!!! The legal definition of entrapment is as follows: "Entrapment occurs when a law enforcement officer induces a person to commit a crime and then tries to punish the person for committing it. However, if a judge or jury believes that a suspect was predisposed to commit the crime anyway, the suspect may be found guilty even if a government agent suggested the crime and helped the defendant to commit it." So.. do the police officer's of Fortville offer free alcholic beverages at the police department and then wait for you to leave their parking lot to pull you over? No, they are patrolling the public areas of Fortville (including public parking lots). Public intoxication is when a person is intoxicated in a place of public domain. The streets of Fortville are public domain! Keep up the good work Officers!!!! Thank you for all that you do for my family day in and day out even when there are people out there that will criticize you for doing your job.......... until they need you and then they want you to do your job!!!!!!!!! |

Ok. I grew up in Fortville and until recently lived there for several years on my own.My folks, still live near by (In Ingalls) so I travel through Fortville quite a lot. Can anyone answer how many fortville police officers, including reserve officers, there is on the force? When I lived there it was a huge number. My point to that is when you see one on the scene you always see more. Fortville has one stop light, no McDonalds, how many police officers do you need? I lived across the street from the Fortville library and saw them in action more than once. If they could get you they would. Oh and let me clarify for those of you who will automatically assume I have been in trouble with the law and that's why I'm posting this....its not. I'm 39 years old and never had a speeding ticket. Never been arrested...I just think that for a small town there are too many officers with not enough to do..

I don't think there are too many. The rotation keeps them from burning out. Now let's hope they keep the drugs out of the schools.
