Firefighter must go, callers tell union boss

Full story: Columbus Dispatch

It's apparently not easy to fire a Columbus firefighter. Although there have been 282 disciplinary cases filed against firefighters since 1996, only nine firefighters have been terminated, with three of those firings overturned on appeal.

He should go and should be man enough to resign and save his fellow firefighters further embarrassment. His record is enough to show he doesn't care about anyone or anything but his own twisted sick self.
How many others like this are in the Columbus Divison of Fire that officials have ignored warnings about and how many have suspended drivers licenses or arrests that would bring character and stability into question?
Would the Dispatch care to investigate ??????

The charter of the fire department is to save lives and property. This man has proven by his actions that life has no value to him.

Therefore he has disqualified himself for the position of fireman. He should go and so should his superiors if they are too weak to enforce discipline.

I'm sure this day and age there is someone out of a job that is capable of filling the vacancy.

Gosh, if I had this many problems, I would never be allowed to come to work. This guy is a complete loser. He has no regard for animals, people or law. Get him off the street.

It may be "uncommon," Jack Reall.

But it's entirely warranted in this case,

Firefighters will not be able to work with Santuomo. The citizens of Columbus no longer trust or respect him.

Let him find other work in the world. Public service, by defintion, serves the public.

And I think the public has spoken loud and clear.

He gets to serve his jail time in 10 days stretches so he can keep working? What bullsh*t! I have never heard of the average person getting a deal like this - why should the judge care about a criminal keeping his job???

Vote yes on Columbus taxes for more service like this! Vote yes on Columbus taxes for more police who keep co-workers relatives out of jail!
Not a chance will I vote yes on the tax issue in August - we need to cut, not spend more! They obviously aren't being responsible with what we have given them! Why raise taxes 25% more??

How many other bad fireman do we have?

I think we as the public, need have our voice heard. Their must be more like him. If his record is this bad, others will follow. It is time to look at what we are paying for, and is suppose to protect us. The rules are too easy, to keep working.

Columbus firefighters, get this guy out before he does any more damage.
Check them out

Let's transfer him to the Fire Alarm Office/Dispatch. That seems to be where they put the bad apples in the fire department. Nobody will work with him at the fire houses and do you want him to treat your head wound at a accident scene.

And these are the same people who will be knocking on my door in the coming weeks and months wanting me to support a 25% increase in the local income tax. I don't think so. It appears to me, given all his disciplinary issues, that the CDF could do with a good house cleaning.

This man must be mentally ill to have committed such an obscene act as killing his own pets. I wouldn't trust him around animals or people ever again.

His co-workers must find him impossible to be around because most fire fighters are compassionate, good and caring people.

FIRE THE GUY, if anyone deserves it he does!

and you wonder why unions get such a bad rap. In the real world governed by integrity, honesty and decency this guy would have been on the street a long time ago. It's this type of behavior and lack of affirmative action on behalf of the commissions who govern public servants which result in the public not supporting your needs, i.e. tax hike. Wake up and do the right thing!

He will be carried on the payroll until his "stress" disability goes through..

What did the Union do to deserve a bad rap. They have had no part in this case to this point.

I think it is important that this scum bag be "FIRED". To let him resign means his record will be "clean" on this issue. There has to be a mention in his record that he was "FIRED", and why, for reference by future employers. Also, it will say to other CFD fire fighters who are marginal or bad employees of the City that the Department will no longer tolerate your behavior. Screw up again, and you will be "FIRED".
