Hmmm, didn't we have a police officer not long ago riding with a drunk attorney in SF who hit and killed a pedestrian? Point being, just because a DD is a retired police officer does not exclusively make one any safer. It should, and likely will but... ya get my drift...

ABQ had it's lowest drunk driving rate in 1996, when the bars were downtown, and the bars had a free drunk bus. I'm grateful this is ex-co pis willing to do the hard work. unless u really are so dumb to suggest your one anecdote is going to reach into the future as a generalization? if not ,then who the heck cares? cheap ride, no jail.

You missed the point, not unusual<sigh>. I'm pleased he feels compelled to assist as he is. Maybe you should volunteer too. A free drunk bus only encourages more to get shitfaced, and its costly to taxpayers, not only for drivers and potential liability when a drunk gets hurt or hurts someone, but also for all the "hot lunches" they toss on the floor that has to be cleaned up so it can be used a few hours later for more responsible riders! Also, ever wonder how those drunks get from their final bus stop to their homes? Golly gee, I'll be they drive - DUH! So the chances of them being popped or hurting someone is still present.

It was a drunk police officer, who was the passenger of the drunk-driving attorney, who hit and killed a drunk pedestrian. Sad, but true.

He is charging $30 a month for the service. It isn't going to encourage anyone to get drunk, they don't need encouragement. You take issue not with what I say but for the sake of the argument it seems. I've no problem with what he's doing, I'm quite pleased with the concept. In fact IMO $30/trip would be a worthy price for a drunk to pay. My problem is with sense of false security the article tends to promote, that because he's a retired police officer everyone is safe and sound. That simply is not true. That's why I brought up the dude in SF, as an example. Lest we forget all the other officers & FF's who have been popped for DWI and/or other criminal activity lately. Remember the taxi cab that got slammed by a DD @ Juan Tabo & Lomas a number of years ago? The one with two drunks in it who had taken the proper course and called a taxi top get home? That accident was why we got the red light cameras, which also promoted a false sense of security. They were effective to some extent but not to the extent they were hyped up to be. The cost to me missy tonta is for the buses, the driver, the OT, the clean up, maintenance, fuel and other operating expenses, as well as potential liability. The retired officer does not cause me any cost, nor did I say he did. You chose to read that into what I said. Now lets once again visit how the drunk gets from the drop off bus stop to their actual home - remember, this is NOT a door to door service like aq taxi provides. So what do I recommend? Way less bars in Abq and heavily promoting the use of taxi's which ARE door to door, as opposed to taxpayer funded bus service which is not effective. The taxi angle means there is a very little chance someone will drive that night once they arrive home from the bar(s). Again, the service he's providing is an excellent idea!!

Careful with this outfit. They had me all signed up and THEN told me there was a mandatory $10/DRIVER tip for each time they took you home. That adds $20 to your tab every time you use them. Thought it was a little underhanded not to mention this up front. HOWEVER, I have not as yet cancelled my subscription

And you would tip a cab driver, wouldn't you? And I've spoken with them asking about the program and that's one of the first things they mention, the drivers are volunteer and it's recommended to TIP. No one can make you do anything let alone make you sign up for a program. Now just because the article says it's a retired police officer who started this company it does not say you have the police department taking you home, or offering you protection. This is a service to promote responsible driving in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and Corrales. And the news story isn't an advertisement. It's a news story...

maybe these people just need to drink @ home and be locked in the home till they sober up. Why does the public have to put up with them driving, staggering across the street, fighting in parking lots ? Get stinking drunk at home where only your family has to put up with the piszed in pants and puke down your shirt.
