My ex's mother is Greek Cypriot and she detested me for the mere fact that I'm American - because the Turks stole her home when she was a child in Cyprus and the Americans built a military base on the Turkish side of the island. So instead of hating the Turks for what they did, she placed the hatred on the Americans. Maybe it's trendy to hate Americans!

I travel for vacation and fun and tend to be with likewise people who are in their 20s and rarely in their 30. I spend most of my time in clubs and universities. My guess is that we (people my age)are more accepting?

I actually did a research paper on this very topic, and for those who have never encountered it, it is pretty interesting stuff. Apparently this fight between the Turks and the Greeks has gone on for a very, very long time. Anyway, to get back to the topic, I think people across the world for the most part are accepting of Americans. Our last 8 years have not helped our street cred, but still it comes down to the individual. Those who hate us tend to be the more ignorant types - the type that believes a stereotype and crucifies a whole country of people for it. This kind of thinking is more prevalent in the undereducated countries, but not so much in the rest of the world. Hey, we're guilty of this type of thinking ourselves about others. Just read these boards for a couple of days and you can't miss it. Still, I think it's folly to categorize a whole group of people as bad just because of the actions of a few. I'm sure we all know someone we love dearly that could easily fall into any negative category. People throughout history have always found reasons to dislike each other and fight. This is no different.

This is no different. I wish you could have met her then because she had some really raw stories that would leave me in tears sometimes. She recently went back to Cyprus to visit when the gov't let them back over the line into Turk territory. The family who 'stole' her home were quite nice and had a box with a small doll and some other personal effects that were left behind, and returned them. Gut wrenching for her, but healing as well. I can understand it to a point because the Brits (especially) are more reserved than we are - unless of course they're drunk - and when they hear loud talking coming from Americans they cringe. I was in London once with a coworker who is from Kentucky. I'm not a snob by a longshot, but have to admit to being highly embarrassed when she was trying to explain the Polaner's all fruit commercial to someone during high tea at the St James Hotel and bellowed in that Kentucky accent WOULD YOU PLEASE PASS THE JELLY!!!!!!!!!! haha
