Wow.. the tribe raised money to send the family to Washington for this honor.. however, the actual truth for everyone to know is that the Highway Patrol is paying for the family to attend... they will even have an escort for the family.. all paid for by the State of North Carolina Highway patrol..

If this is true, why do you have a problem with it? |
who cares how or who is paying for it?

Thank you Congressman Shuler for backing the Blanton family and honoring Trooper Blanton.
information came directly from a family member.. the reason I have a problem with it.. have you heard of any benefits for the Mathis family that just lost 3 members? have you heard of any benefits for the little boy that got mauled by a dog on Pumpkin town a few months back? has there been any benefits for a lot of families that are losing their jobs and can't pay their mortgage or put food on the table for their family?
enough is enough, that's the point. there's alot of others in need. As stated, the State of NC is paying for their trip to Washington in his honor.. he deserves the honor in his name.... but the State is paying for it..(which is actually citizens of NC), so why should we give twice? |

Don't you mean the taxpayers. |

Aside from dying on the job did this guy ever do anything really great? Is society going to honor everyone who dies on the job? The roofer, the lumber jack, the walmart worker who dies in a stampeed.
Hey I feel bad for the guy and his family but I'm sick of hearing about it and I certainly don't want to pay for it. |
There has been several other officers died in the line of duty in Haywood County and I don't remember them getting any kind of benefits or handouts for the family.... what's the difference? Agree with you.. enough is enough.. |
His wife seems to be doing much better, safe in the arms of another trooper.
As far as I know you are free to raise money for any of the families that you mentioned. |
What about the little Latino boy that was mauled by a pit bull out in Brevard..... |
believe me.. I have given my share to families.. and will continue to do so.. however, enough is enough.. there are no more expenses to be paid out.. the tribe and state (taxpayers) paid for the medical bills, funeral, plus numerous other things.. there is nothing owed, so why ask for more? |
whos asking?

I get so damn tired of getting on Topix and reading post from people who claim to be all knowing, when actually they know nothing! I KNOW for an absolute fact that the North Carolina State Highway Patrol is NOT paying for the family to take a week long trip to the nation's capital for National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington next week. And if they were, they would only be paying for the immediate family. I know that Michaela along with Shawn's parents and siblings, his grand-parents, his aunts and his in-laws all are planning on attending the ceremony in DC. And as of today's date, they have not been contacted about a free trip.
Perhaps you have this trip confused with the memorial that is held in Raleigh. For this memorial EVERY troop in the state that has lost a trooper in the line of duty assigns a trooper to the immediate family and escorts them to Raleigh for the ONE DAY service. They normally stay overnight and return the following day - all paid for by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. And furthermore, the Cherokee communnity held this fund-raiser because Shawn and his family is one of their own. Family looks out for each other and extends a helping hand when they can. I doubt anyone that is here complaining even knew about the fund-raiser, much less drove to Cherokee and purchased a meal or gave a donation, so why are you complaining. Not one red dime came from your pocket so again why are you complaining? People gave because they wanted to, key word WANTED to give not because they had to. They gave so an entire family could travel to see someone they loved be honored. As for who paid what when Shawn was murdered and during Tye's hospital stay and death - again, I will say you don't know of which you speak. You know what they say about people who assume things - well, in this case, that saying is true. You have heard half-truths or half a story or pure gossip and taken it for gospel. Unless you know something to be an absolute fact, I suggest you keep your suspicions to yourself. Yes, other troopers in Haywood County have died in the line of duty and the community reached out to them, the difference is, neither had a premature baby in the hospital fighting for his life. I recently spent less than two hours at Duke Medical Center with my child and walked away with an $11,000 bill ... so one can only imagine what a bill would be for a child who stayed in the hospital for 4.5 straight months with around the clock care, surgeries, several doctors, etc ... even with insurance, the bill was incridible. That is why I respectfully ask you, if you don't know of which you speak, please keep your assumptions to yourself or if you don't have anything positive to say, please keep your negativity to yourself. |

For those of you who continually complain about all this family has received, do you know that they are giving back to the community? The Tye Blanton Foundation, a not-for-profit, has been established in memory of Tye. In honor of Tye Blanton, help us to supply items for premature and sick infants of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit(NICU.) These items will give a sense of personality and comfort to the infants of the NICU and help parents to make the NICU a home away from home for their newborn.
Needed items include: Micro-Premie Clothing Premie Clothing Newborn Clothing Premie Socks Receiving Blankets Homemade Baby Blankets *All items must be NEW with tags still attached as well as new materials for homemade blankets. ********** As for Joi, Keyshawn and Isaiah, a fund has been set up at the North Carolina State Employee's Credit Union to help with funeral expenses. For the other's, ANY one of you can hold a fund-raiser for them at any time. I'm certain they would appreciate it. Usually all it takes is someone who cares enough about the family to start the fund-raiser and then people will give if they know the family or not simply because they care. It still saddens me that people didn't understand just how ill Tye really was and why it was so important to hold fund-raisers for him. The family never once asked anyone to do anything for them other than pray, but because people loved and cared about this family they organized the fund-raisers and because people who didn't know the family, but cared, made them a success. I hope if you or your family ever faces such a tragic time in your life that the kindness of others will help and be a comfort to you. This family appreciates every single thing that was ever done for them during the past year. |
