I have seen the prices in South Haven and the home size, it seems a value. Is this a good place to live? What is the community like? Good schools? Looking for real world answers, not simply statistics.

South Haven is a great place to live, I have lived here now for 4 years with no robberies and any of the crap some people are saying! The school are fantastic and my kids are doing great! We have had no vandalism or anything in our home, I trust the area the people and the schools....good luck to you! Our house is huge and you cant beat the cost here compared to anyone else! The garbage bill does suck for the homeowners association, but if that is all......who cares!

The proposed hospital right down the road from South Haven (Rte 6 and 49) is also promising. Besides isn't there a significant difference in property taxes? The cost per square foot also appears better in South Haven, as well as the yards. The previous comment regarding schools shows that the elementary schools score higher than Hobart. For the money and without a strong alternative, is there a better option?

no. i have lived here my whole life, south haven is horrible. the kids are hoodlums. i have had my car broken into 4 times and my house and my neighbors house has been vandalized on several occasions. stuff has been stolen out of my shed (which was bolted) and there are drug dealers, trap houses, and obnoxious drivers. TRUST ME, the older people dont see it because they dont hang around the city, but younger kids do and they are hoodlums, and if you have kids, watch out...horrible place to raise them.

My wife and I have lived in South Haven since 1982. We raised two sons here who went to Paul Saylor School, which was a wonderful experience for them and us. I live on a quiet street and have great neighbors. We have never had any problems so I guess it just depends on what area of South Haven you live .... just like any town in NWI. I'm not naive, I'm sure there are and have been problems. I think some of it is just rumors though. Tell me that Hobart, Portage, Valparaiso, Chesterton, etc. don't have drug problems or thefts. My In-laws live in a good location of Hobart (Barrington Ridge) and her neighbor's car has been broken into 3-times. South Haven has a great county sheriff presence at all times, even on bicycle in the warm months. No matter where you want to live you should check out the local neighborhood before buying. Proud resident of South Haven.

South Haven like any other city in NWI has its problems. I lived here as a child from 70 to 80. I lived in New Chicago, Hobart, Portage and Hammond. I had had more crap broken into and stolen when I lived in New Chicago and Portage. Had Vandalism and theft occur in all the above towns and cities. Lived in my current home for 15 yrs two vehicles break ins and one paint job on my fence. Every town has good and bad but most people who own homes are good people. Most of the problems are caused by the transients in town homes. Water, sewer and garbage are quite expensive since there is not a municipality. I rate the town a 7 out of 10. Prices on homes are affordable. I have yet to see a home that needs to be torn down that is just BS! If you need affordability access to good schools and you want to own your own home South Haven is a decent option. The biggest problem in NWI currently is that Mr. Daley tour down the housing for its gang problem, which sent them to our area! If there were more good parents, not raising a latch key wanna be hoods things would be even better!

I have lived in South Haven since 1986 I lived in the newer part till 2009 now I live in the older part. There is nothing wrong here that isn't wrong anywhere else. It isn't safe anywhere in the world anymore. Anything can happen anywhere at any time. Some of my neighbors in both parts of South Haven have lived here since there houses were built and their kids have houses here now also. There is nothing wrong with living in South Haven.

I have lived in South Haven since June of 2009, and haven't had any issues. Yes, there is a variety of people, so it's hard to label a whole community based on one street or corner.
If you drive thru the community, you will see the houses are either Ranch or Cape Cod, with little variance. Some people take VERY good care of their property, while others, don't.
I will say that I have personally seen some problems on Juniper, near Route 6 by the apartment buildings several times (domestic issues with people, police officers there from time to time), but it's nothing out of the ordinary.
