Driver charged with DUI Manslaughter

BROOKSVILLE — A Spring Hill man has been charged with DUI manslaughter in a head-on collision that killed a 41-year-old Weeki Wachee man in December.

Mitchell D. Vliet, 20, was arrested late Wednesday night and booked into the county jail. He remained behind bars Thursday, his bail set at $15,000.

The Florida Highway Patrol said that on Dec. 20, Vliet's 1994 Ford car crossed a paved median on U.S. 19 and pulled into the path of a 1998 Kia SUV driven by Troy John Schultz. The accident happened about 3:30 a.m. near Grizzly Bear Lane.

Schultz died at the scene.

Authorities say Vliet sped off after the crash.

FHP found blood at the scene, so investigators believed he was injured.

They found Vliet at a convenience store near the accident scene and took him to Oak Hill Hospital.

In September, one of Schultz's relatives filed a wrongful death claim against Vliet.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of Linda S. Johnson, seeks more than $15,000 in damages.

The FHP is still investigating the crash.
