It's our fault for moving in on their territory . If we keep building where else do these creatures suppose to go . Now they will capture him and kill him because this lady was attacked . It's a shame what greed does .....

Um..."The bear is still at large...".
Isn't that where wild bears are normally? |

I totally agree with both of you, it sucks a lady was injured but really we are invading their habitat not the other way around

This is California; I would expect him to be checked into rehab by now and issuing a statement through his publicist. |

You have to remember that with all the fires, all the wild animals are having a very hard time finding food. That is why the incidents of attacks by coyotes has gone up too. My guess is the bear was really after the dogs, for food, but attacked her because she probably tried to save the dogs. We are going to be hearing a lot more of these incidents until (if it actually happens) the area's greenery returns and then the wildlife comes back. Sometimes even though the grass returns, the animals don't. I think people should be aware of this and take extra precautions, like not walking alone, or not walking in remote areas.

I'm glad to see the posts in favor of the bear. It really is humans encroaching on the habitat of some very dangerous wild animals. You are all probably right, too. This bear will be hunted down and killed.
Hmmm... isn't everyone innocent until proven guilty? He should be taken to court and given the ability to defend himself. After all, we don't just send criminals to the chair without a fair trial.:) |

In the southern states and other areas, American Black Bears eat many different types of foods that people also eat, including fruits such as blueberries, blackberries, apples, and peaches. Black bears also eat small animals, but they account for only about 10% of a bear's diet |

Desi;
I totally agree. The problem is that the wildfires had destroyed almost all of the bears natural foods, so they are hungry and getting desperate, especially since they need to fatten up for winter. The other possiblity is that the bear had a cub or cubs and was trying to protect them. If people insist on living in rural areas they have to learn how to do so in harmony with the wildlife. |

It's interesting how many of you make comments that slam on people that live in "the bears habitat." What kind of animals do you think lived in LA before you invaded it and poored concrete all over the ground? Should we all pack in like rats in LA? People who live in the mountains are actually much more environmentally concious that you might think. We learn to live and work with the animals of the area, we don't surround ourselves with concrete and asphalt and all of the other eminities such as Starbucks that require excessive use of energy and pollution.
I was a firefighter on the fire that was near the attack. I had numerous bear encounters during the two weeks I was there. Yes I was in their territory trying to save their habitiat, so I was very "bear aware" and took all of the precautions just as she did. Sometimes these things happen. Many times we run into bears and we both run the other way. I say this because I ask you to think of the woman not just the bear. We are animals too. |

A better lead sentence would be "Kern County authorities said two dogs may have saved a woman who survived a bear attack." The use of the modal verb "might" implies that they could have, but did not, save her; "may" implies that there action could have contributed to her survival.
A minor quibble, but since this is the lead, make sure it says what you want it to say. |

Bobby, great post! |

I hope the lady is alright.
I hope they never ever catch the bear, because they have a nasty habit of shooting them when he was only doing what is in his nature. RUN BEAR RUN |
