The vast majority of long-time homeless people are addicts and therefore criminals. However anyone who knows the city well also knows that this group has not attracted the homeless to the park or that particular vicinity, but rather has simply gone to the area that homeless have naturally congregated for a long time. And for those of you who stated that it is better to teach a man to fish that to give him a fish, you need to realized that the homeless are homeless because they are in someway incapable of "fishing" for themselves. We can all sit here and argue about the long-term effectiveness of this group's campaign, but the bottom line is this......feeding a hungry person is GOOD, always. amen.

Oh jeeze. So much ignorance. Luckily I got off work early and have some time on my hands!
"GIRLY"- I can assure you that not all of us live with 'mommy and daddy'. Many of us who were at FNB this week are over 18. Who are you to make presumptions about our class status or our family situations when you don't even know any of us? How fucking ignorant.
"BOBBY"- how is anyone 'abusing' a public park? Isn't a public space just that, PUBLIC? Who says some people are allowed to eat there and others cannot? How do you make that judgement call?
"THEPOPEWASRIGHT"- you can absolutely bring the family, Food Not Bombs is for anybody who's hungry :)
"A TEACHER"- FYI, The food is not usually just taken outta the dumpster and served as is, in fact not all the food is even dumpstered. I'm pretty sure a lot of the food is donated by supporters or by businesses that might've otherwise thrown it out due to not selling it (anyone who's ever worked in the restaurant biz can attest to the massive amount of waste of perfectly good sellable food), or bought. Also, you're creating this false dichotomy- young idealism vs.'college/masters degrees/jobs'. It is exactly that attitude that leads people to believe that they cannot continue to do good in the world past a certain age for fear of being labelled 'immature' or 'naiive. What about those of us who support FNB or participate in FNB who already have jobs? College degrees? Families? Age doesn't always have to kill idealism and the desire to help others.
"COMMON SENSE"- Miami has had a FNB on and off for the past seven years (probably before that actually). There is a FNB in Palm Beach too. Why does it matter where the participants are from? Or do you just not want it happening in YOUR backyard? And we're 'scum'? Fucking please. The condo developers and corrupt politicians (esp. those in the housing agency) in South FL are the real scum, perpetuating the affordable housing crisis and pricing us out of our own communities (and exacerbating the homelessness problem). Org.'s like FNB are trying to help out in whatever little way they can.
"fORMER FLORIDIAN"- Stop playing dumb. Why would I bring someone I don't know to live in my house? And yes, helping people DOES feel good. Is that the only reason why we do it? No. Does that mean no one should ever help anyone else, because god forbid they might get some satisfaction out of helping to get a little food in a hungry person's belly? Nope.
...also, THE COPS ARE LIARS. About a dozen witnesses can attest to the fact that the last friday before this one the cops threatened us with arrest if we did not disperse "in five minutes". They just wanted to look good in front of the media and not give ft. lauderdale any more bad publicity (coughNauglecough).

Instead, the "do-gooders" abuse a public park at the expense of the city, so that they can have their moment of "feel good" while doing very little to solve the problem. Hmm. Your logic is about as shallow as your ability to empithise. Did you not get any love from mommy or dady? I'd be willing to bet that you are one of those completely pathetic, self centered, arrogant knows everything, punks just waiting to get slapped.

I dive into dumpsters but keep the food for myself and my family. The best is the Chink "eat all you can" buffet. Some of the seafood gets pretty ripe but like pussee, once you get past the smell you definitely got it licked!

Do you have any idea how many homeless don't have jobs and don't want jobs? The answer is, most. The reason is by their choice. In Fort Lauderdale no one has to live on the street unless they want to. The city has a state of the art shelter. The shelter was built to house the homeless that lived on a city parking lot. There were approximately 178 homeless on this lot. Do you know how many went to the newly opened shelter. Two. The rest just went back onto the streets because that is what they want. In so far as a home is concerned, why don't you let them live with you, if you are so concerned.

to a lot of the assholes that think homelessnes is a choice you probably haven't left the comfort of your parents arms, and it's sad that you'll probably go on with your selfish lives taking a lot of things for granted, a lot of this people don't have parents, they are educated people that got cought up in drugs, segregation(yes as a matter fact their is a lot of segregation still) and suffer from mental problems that aren't being treated like they should thanks to this country's ghorrible health care system and we keep calling ourselfs the best country when we can't even provide our people with their essential needs , food not boobs is not only for the homeless it means everyone deserves food and that right should never be taken away from the people

Hey, isnīt this just some people having a picnic and letting anyone who wants to join them join? My daughter is one of those involved and while I disagree with the principle I admire her (in my mind misguided) desire to make the world a better place even if its in a small way and right in front of her. Isnīt that what Doestoevsky said? The dumpster diving thing is way overblown, the majority of the food is donated by businesses and prepared in the homes of the FNB participants on the day of the feed. Again, its just a picnic and youīre all invited.

Why is it so horrific? Homeless people do the dumpster diving themselves most of the time. If people can't afford to buy the (overpriced) food, why not grab what no one else would buy? We waste so much food in this country; it's ridiculous for you to say that they shouldn't be allowed to give what isn't wanted to those people society doesn't want.
