I think you're being foolishly optimistic to make such assumptions that simply because the state is here today means it will be here in the future. That IS what you're saying, isn't it?
However, all things also come to an end. The state has never been in this situation before, with so many people, with the systems it it has, etc. Growth cannot be sustained forever. And all living things require sustenance. Thus we know that scarcity (of all consumables) is not some Dr Doom pessimism or paranoia; it is a mathematical certainty.
CA has reached what you might call a tipping point (if you haven't ever read the book, The Tipping Point, you might check it out). It explains basically (i am oversimplifying this immensely) why crises such as these can "suddenly" strike, because people are complacent until the signs are obvious and inescapable, but by then it is too late (past the tipping point).
I have read the book Tipping Point, and yes, it's a very good book. My belief is simply that we haven't hit that tipping point yet, and yes, I agree with you, it will happen, and when it does, you will see something along the lines of what you're talking about.

My point is that while I do think the state is in for some rough years ahead, I do believe that it will eventually rebound from those. Look at some other states. Michigan was a boom for a long time, they crashed incredibly fast, and now they're on their way back up again. Washington was just sort of there, floundering along for a while, then a few businesses relocated there (Boeing (sp?), a major Microsoft plant, etc), and boom, it's enjoying success. New York has had so many swings like that I can't count.

My point is that it may take a decade, or even two, but the state WILL rebound simply because history tells us it will. History inevitably repeats itself. No reason to believe it'll stop now.

More than anything else though, I've always been a believer that YOU control your own destiny. To blame the economy or Obama, or Bush or your boss or anyone else is a cop out. I've tracked my last 14 years in business. 2009 was the only year that I made less than 10% more than the year before (2009 I made about 2% more, so far this year I'm on track to surpass that 10% level again). Why? Because I didn't make any excuses. I think the excuses are a big reason we're in the mess we're in. Sure, I've had to work harder to do it, but I'm still getting it done.

You think Nutmeg Whitman is business savvy? This is a woman that has spent 81 million dollars to BUY herself a office, she has no clear view how to run? She jet sets around the state, she HIRED a Washington DC firm for her advertising.(WHY didn't she hire a California company if she wants to create jobs??) She claims she will create jobs but she wants to cut state workers jobs by over 40,000. She says she wants a "common sense" to budgeting. NOW I ask you all , how is spending 81 million dollars to get a job,"common sense"???

Also have it here way, education will be back to the basics... I for one think we need school libraries, we need music, the arts and technology labs. How else to expose children to their future?

Sorry but I am voting for the "Hippie" I really do think Brown, knows what this state needs. I think he has the right people lined up to help him. He has the backing of Chaing, who I wish would run, but with Chaing helping the Gov... all will be good.

Okay still not calpers, San Jose has it's own retirement system and is structured completely different, all you have are talking points from other people with talking points. The average cost of pensions for calpers employees has only risen one percent, hardly bankrupting the system

Something will inevitably happen that will start to tilt the scales in the other direction. It's impossible to say what that event will be, but as I said, history tells us that it will eventually happen
I Think DojoRat is right about how something will happen. I think that something is going to be a big ass earthquake. It will be a 7.0 for about 1 1/2 min long on the Hayward fault. We will get loads of government money just like New Orleans. I think it came out to $500,000 per house to rebuild. I just hope we dont have any fires. If we do than we would be Fu#@ked. We will have to give it all to our fire GODS.

California needs to swallow a big bitter pill. We need serious change quickly before it's too late. Throw out all the incumbants and their tired old games.

We need change quickly as out children will suffer if we don't fix this soon.

California needs to stop rewarding people for bad behavior.

You have to be a fool to vote for your hippy.
He empowered the now out of control public worker unions the first time around.
Cut state workers jobs by over 40,000, no one will even notice they are gone.
Enforce immigration law and Ca has a chance.

It doesn't matter who you put in there. The governer has no power.
With this current legislature only a candidate like Jerry Brown could have his way. That would be putting the final nail in our coffin.

We do need a business person, capable of making tough decisions, experience in budget matters, and a spine to make it work.

I think the next governor will have a much better chance of turning this ship around with the coming changes I hope to see in our legislature.

"We the people..." CANNOT SEND ANOTHER YES MAN TO SACRAMENTO BEFORE THE MOST CORRUPT GROUP OF LEGISLATURES TO EVER RUN A STATE!

Brown by no means is a bad guy. Not the point. But putting another leftist before the social council up north is another 4 years of bad fiscal direction for this state. This time we can not afford it.

We need a fiscal genius, a leader whom has managed a REAL business and it is amazing that anyone on this message board would write idiotic ideas that the qualifications of Whitman are anything less than STELLAR.

Not only did she build EBAY from 4M is sales and 30 employees to 8 BILLION and 15,000 employees! YES EMPLOYEES! JOBS! A BA at PRINCETON! Add to that a MBA at HARVARD BUSINESS SCHOOL, a leader at P&G, Disney, Hasbro and FTD. And married a Neurosurgeon from STANFORD.

And Pretty Poison you are worried that she would return our schools to BASICS! Sounds like a dream candidate.

A man often overlooked but doing interesting things in Chris Christie, newly elected Governor Of New New Jersey.
.
He skipped the happy diversity social liberal talk (he's very conservative Republican) and ran on a New Jersey can't pay it's bills and we need to cut programs platform. Keep in mind New Jersey is running into a deeper financial abyss than many other states.
.
He ran promising to take a meat clever to state programs and once in office made good on that promise (NJ Gov's have broad discretion in such matters). Unions and other social program groups are wailing and gnashing their teeth but Christie has stood firm.
.
The results will prove interesting.

Ah...remember those 'good old days'?

I am Governor Jerry Brown
My aura smiles
And never frowns
Soon I will be president...

Carter Power will soon go away
I will be Fuhrer one day
I will command all of you
Your kids will meditate in school
Your kids will meditate in school!

California Uber Alles
Uber Alles California

Zen fascists will control you
100% natural
You will jog for the master race
And always wear the happy face

Close your eyes, can't happen here
Big Bro' on white horse is near
The hippies won't come back you say
Mellow out or you will pay
Mellow out or you will pay!

California Uber Alles

Now it is 1984
Knock-knock at your front door
It's the suede/denim secret police
They have come for your uncool niece

Come quietly to the camp
You'd look nice as a drawstring lamp
Don't you worry, it's only a shower
For your clothes here's a pretty flower.

DIE on organic poison gas
Serpent's egg's already hatched
You will croak, you little clown
When you mess with President Brown

"No experience in Sacramento"? is a failing?? Look what all the "experienced in Sacramento" socialist idiots have done to the state! And I don't give a crap about her voting record. What makes Poizner qualified? He's a RINO and a poor one at that. And if California morons vote for AG Moonbeam you might as well close up shop and trade the Stars and Stripes for that Toilexico rag.
