Roadside marker honors Mary White

A pictue would have been a nice touch.

That area is closer to Weed than Mayhill. Might make the location harder to find for those who are not familiar with it.

I'm proud to say that I spent a summer up at Camp Mary White as a councelor (my camp name was "Kat") one year and I can honestly say that it was the best summer I ever had as an adult! I myself do not have daughters so I won't get the honor of sending mine there but I hope that many, many girls get the joy I had of attending this wonderful camp! Girls need a positive role model and Mary White was worthy of the title! Thank you for placing the marker!

Thank-you, Mrs. White for your leadership in young girls' lives. You never lost your grip, you stood-fast and work for something positive in this World. My prayers to Mrs. White's family that healing balm be over your spirit, soul, and body....We lost a pioneer for sure....bless this fine "Woman"...

I spent many summers at Camp Mary White.. I miss it so much! I am really happy about what the Friends of Camp Mary White are doing to restore and preserve the camp. I hope that someday I might be able to send my girls there..(If I ever have one, of course ;))

I never attended Camp Mary White as a summer camper, but I was a "troop" camper when I was a kid. We'd go to CMW, camp in the old Adrondack cabins and every now and then were graced with a visit by "Miss Mary." It was a wonderful childhood experience.

35 years later, I'm a member of the group "Friends of Camp Mary White," (FCMW) and I like several other very successful women are working hard to not only preserve, but return the heritage of Miss Mary's legacy back to CMW. It's been a dedication of love.

Three years ago, I suggested the Women's Historical Marker project to the board of FCMW and began the application process to honor this phenomenal woman. Unfortunately personal family matters took me away from the project for awhile, but the wonderful FCMW board championed on for our project. I can't tell you how proud I was when our FCMW President "Shorty" (Linda Hockett) called me to tell me that our marker was approved. It was a great day!

We will dedicate this marker on Saturday during the cullmination of the FCMW "work week" and reunion/annual meeting. We all look forward to paying homage to a woman that had such impact on our lives.

I wish the ADN had run the full-fledged "feature" story I had emailed to them (with pictures and a sidebar). Maybe they'll still run it. I don't know. But this piece didn't do justice to the work of Miss Mary. I truly hope they run the full story.
