Why Does Saul Alinsky Inspire Such Passion?

Jan 30, 2012 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: National Public Radio

Tell me, in the few words your vocabulary allows, what you know about Saul Alinsky, and if you can manage it, what he has to do with Barack Obama.

Barack Obama's training in Chicago by the great community organizers is showing its effectiveness. It is an amazingly powerful format, and the method of my late father always works to get the message out and get the supporters on board. When executed meticulously and thoughtfully, it is a powerful strategy for initiating change and making it really happen. Obama learned his lesson well.

I am proud to see that my father's model for organizing is being applied successfully beyond local community organizing to affect the Democratic campaign in 2008. It is a fine tribute to Saul Alinsky as we approach his 100th birthday.

Hold a sec there, moron. You and other left brained clowns tout how you are the middle class, yet alinsky is trying to destroy the middle class, and you praise him??? Dumbocrats!
Alinsky saw the United States as an unfair society which needed to be reordered by any mean that would work. He detested the values of the middle class which he considered to be self indulgent and greedy. Since the middle class is the real backbone of the society that had formed in America it would be necessary to tear down that middle class before the society itself could be rebuilt on a more acceptable model. The model was Marxist.
Alright, all phoney Marines report to nobama immediately and say, oops, we fkd up, sir. Then a forced road march back to looneytown!
That claim about Alinsky trying to destroy the middle class is completely false. Alinsky actually advocated the middle class and the poor work together to take back power from the corporations that were gaining power at the expense of the working people. In no way was he for the destruction of the middle class, but for the growth of the people as a whole.

By trying to keep it from becoming the fascist state the GOP is trying to create today. Fascism is the merger of state and corporate power. Wonder why the GOP liked The Citizens United Supreme Court Ruling so much. Gave the corporations the opportunity to line their pockets so they could make laws that benefit their corporate donors.

Your post invokes 4 of Alinsky's tactics:

3. "Whenever possible, go outside the expertise of the enemy. Look for ways to increase insecurity, anxiety and uncertainty.(This happens all the time. Watch how many organizations under attack are blind-sided by seemingly irrelevant arguments that they are then forced to address.)

6. "A good tactic is one your people enjoy."

8. "Keep the pressure on, with different tactics and actions, and utilize all events of the period for your purpose."

9. "The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself."

You learned well.

Partisan hogwash, Bluebird. First of all, Saul Alinsky was a community organizer who tried to give a voice to the poor and disenfranchised. Any caring American would support that effort. However, Obama's methods, with a strong emphasis on compromise, are in most ways unlike those of Alinsky's.
Obama turned down lucrative offers from major law firms, and chose instead to take a low-paying position as a community organizer. He was very successful in that endeavor, though his approach was strikingly different from that of Alinsky.

What a load of anti-intellectual bull-sh!t. Most 'progressives' have read/studied/taught Alinsky methodological radicalism. Hell, Hillary Clinton's Wellesley College thesis was on Alinsky rabble-rousing.

Obviously correct..but you're wasting your time.

I remember when the John Birchers and even William F Buckley were on the same page with Alinsky..

In fact, I remember when Ayn Rand was considered by many on the right to be an anti-capitalist that wanted to undermine western ideologies.

I think it's humorous to see hard-righties like Kasich, Rick Scott and Paul Ryan who now think Rand is some sort of conservative hero.

The republican party of today (tea party) is uniformed and largely ignorant of fact.
