After speaking with the ex-girlfriend, the deputies arriving on scene initiated cell phone contact with the suspect (an illegal Mexican), who was easily identified, but allowed until Friday the 30th at 6pm to turn himself in. Not surprsingly, the deadline passed without incident, and in the meantime I left for the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for an emergency appointment with a surgeon.
Repeated attempts to reach the deputy in charge of the case were unsuccessful, until I received a call and assured that a bench warrant was being issued for the suspect's arrest, and the deputy would "keep in touch." Currently 24 days have passed without a warrant being issued, and I have waited thorugh a judge's 2 week vacation as well as reassurance that the Hendry County S.O. is "doing all we can. We have him on the run." I have also been told by Hendry County dispatch to stop calling to check if the suspect has been arrested.
I am a veteran of the armed forces, am college educated, with no criminal record, and this is how justice is being served. I am well aware that if I attempted to seek the suspect out and exact revenge for the physical, emotional, and psychological damage that is still fresh in my mind and face, I would be arrested immediately and sent to jail. Where is the justice?
Again, this probably isn't of much interest to you, but I am in Minnesota recuperating from a painful surgery, and keep reliving the event; such a brutal, unprovoked, psychotic crime should be regarded at a minumum, and punished. I feel as impotent and frustrated as I've felt in my life. This is what I protected this country for. Thanks, Hendry County.
