I just received a notice from the school that La Porte High School will be subject to stage one school improvements for reasons of (the school did not perform in MATH for two or more consecutive years.)
I'm considering moving my child out of La Porte due to the fact that she has always been a commended student and now can't seem to pass math.
Looking over the report,I now see why she struggled. My daughter would come home last year saying that she spent most of her English period watching other students straighten the English teachers hair and most of her Biology period listening to the teacher talk about what he did on the weekends and who he thought was going to make cheerleader. The percentage of children that didn't pass this year was unreal.
Is anyone else worried about the quality of education our children are receiving or not receiving?

If they put in as much effort/finances etc. towards education as they did towards all of their sports....we'd have a mighty fine school don't ya think?!

So you condemn an entire school district on the hearsay of a little girl who can't pass math. Come on, the problem is not the teachers, it is the student and her family, because lots of her classmates passed with flying colors.

Maybe if you pull your kid out, our scores would improve. Not trying to be hateful but you need to know all the facts before you start running your mouth.

1st It's the lack of discipline that is one of the biggest problems. The kids are not made to follow the handbook and rules. next it is the lack of support the teachers get from administration when they try to enforce the rules.

I agree to an extent...however,I do not agree with doing a teachers hair during school hours . That's a little bit out of control. There is a total lack of discipline at that school no doubt. And I believe it starts all the way at the top. A lot of the faculty I really do like as people, but not so much as far as leaders or disciplinaries.
On any given day you can go up to that school and kids are walking around aimlessly. I've seen it happen many times, since I use to substitute there on a regular basis.
It's sad really....

Wow, thats rich...me condemn the entire school? No, I think it did that all by its self. It's so sad that La Porte is bogged down with narrow minded uneducated citizens like yourself. If you would look up the information that I am referring to, which happens to be public information...you would see that the numbers speak for themselves.

The facts that I'm referring to is public information that the school sent to me in the mail...your right, maybe if I pull my child out of that school then of course the entire schools scores would improve....seriously, are you a complete idiot?
Not to be hateful but...If you have children, bless their heart....

What does biology and English have to do with the Math?? My suggestion if you have to come on topix to complain then it's time to move on. Go to Pasadena, south Houston or deer park those would be good choices. LPISD is a great school with great leadership. Don't come on a comedy forum to complain. Get out there with your posse and go to house to house and see for yourself.

Check all the facts before you bash the school. The mark for meeting AYP has becoming very high and when all the data comes out you will learn that several high schools in the area missed AYP. This does not change the fact that improvement needs to be made in math.

I highly doubt an English teacher just did hair all day and the biology teacher you are referring to is a good teacher. My son had him and he learned a great deal along with developing an interest in science.

And my favorite part of this discussion is the use of the words....lack of discipline. Every time someone is not happy with a school that is the first words out of ones mouth. Do you really think educated adults would just let kids do what they want? Can there be problems at times that need to be addressed...yes...but let's get away from saying things like total lack of discipline.

If you are concerned instead of using this forum might I suggest you make an appointment with the principal and talk to him about how it will be addressed. Nothing like a good face to face conversation as opposed to an anonymous topic.

FYI...from TEA website...

AUSTIN - Forty-four percent of Texas campuses met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) targets this year due to a substantial increase in requirements, the Texas Education Agency announced today.

So... because others failed... it's acceptable for La Porte to fail?

This calls for a milt-billion dollar bond issue to pay for all new schools and lots of Ipads for all grades. I addition all teachers should be required to attend seminars I las Vegas on how to teach "diversity" and "tolerance".

After all, we have learned that spending obscene amounts of money on buildings and consultants always improves grades.

some do NOT want to learn, they would rather have a career with the local crack heads and gangs. then there are those that KNOW they do not need a education, they can lay up on heir lazy ass and have the government take care of all their needs and wants, like FAT ASS and GOTP.

First of all, I did address this with school officials last year....second of all, I could care less about the other schools that didn't meet AYP. My concern is for LaPorte High School at this time, since after all that is where my family resides and that is where my child goes to school.
Your absolutely correct, Lack of Discipline is a poor choice of words....That school just straight up doesn't care at all. And as for your brilliant son that is now so eager to learn science, good for him! Truth is, there are many other students that did not get a single thing from that class.

Bad parenting, bad schooling... bad village that should have raised the child better... but never fault the child.

People will find fault with them the rest of their lives... let them have their childhood without finding fault.

We spend so much time concentrating on their negatives... that their positives are ignored.

We need a complete overhaul in the way we educate our children.

Accentuate the positive... work on each child's strengths... don't let one child be held behind while waiting for classmates to catch up.

Classes should be taught in six week blocks at multiple skill levels in each subject... those proficient moving up to their level of understanding... those who fail repeat the course.

This way... an entire semester of education is not lost by failure in each subject.

It's hard to get your heart back into learning once you've failed a semester or two.

Shorter length classes would spotlight the problem children... and proper focus could be applied.

Never blame the child... for failure at school.
