The previous commenter seems to be putting a lot of weight into the notion that the DRIVER was at fault. What is the rationale? Because they were not from La Mirada, or they were older than the median age? These are not compelling reasons to conclude guilt for the driver.
I see lots of reason to be feeling sad for the driver. After all, they are required to live with the fact that someone ended their young life by impact with their car. Trust me, it’s not something you shake-off even if you’re completely innocent.
This story is lean on information, although some key facts are there if you read between the lines:
Imperial Hwy is 6 (SIX !!) lanes there, and there is NO crosswalk at Burgess (Though there are crosswalks at BOTH major intersections nearby ... a few hundred feet away).
Imperial Hwy: It is indeed a highway. At 6:38 PM it would have been rather dark, and likely to be rather busy in spurts on a Friday.
The deceased was aged 16, and was already attending a third high school. Was this a troubled kid? The story doesn’t explain why explicitly, though it does mention her other schools (is this offered as a hint?). And why was she attending a continuation after only a couple weeks into a school year (another hint)? The previous commenter would probably have some helpful insights regarding how the driver was to blame for these sad facts as well.
Based on this bit of sketchy information, I would not be putting much weight on the driver being at fault .... unless the victim was hit on the sidewalk. The story doesn’t say she was hit on the sidewalk ....

Tisk tisk tisk! What kind of example are you setting for your children? Violence is not the answer. As a parent, you should be setting a better example for your children.

I hope YOUR kids are smarter and have more common sense than "Frenchie" did and fully understand that jaywalking is not only illegal but can lead to VERY DEADLY consequences.

Samantha's friends came together and did a car wash in honor of her, they raised enough money to pay for her casket and all the flowers at the funeral. She was a nice girl, and as all teenagers have, a few problems. My son was a good friend of hers and was very devastated with her loss. She knew I was upset with my son, and Samantha & my son had gone to church together and came home with flowers for me. She was a blessing to me, and to my son. Please do not put blame on her for what happened, no one is blaming the driver either, I can only imagine what she is going through. Samantha's parents are very upset,, but are dealing with it. You can't judge anyone until you have walked in there shoes!! Thank you to all who helped at the car wash (75 young teens showed up to work) and to all those who supported us by having their cars washed. We appreciate all that you did, and it was a great blessing to her family.

I suggest that you read the very first post, written by Sharon Mendoza. Someone IS blaming the driver. More than some ONE is blaming the driver.

It's silly not to recognize that running in front of a car on a busy highway can be deadly. If you don't share this notion with your kids, we will likely attend more funerals for youngsters soon. That's not making a judgment of this young girl, it's simply recognizing the danger to which she lost her life.

And, yes, there are lots of people who blamed the driver. That's exactly why so many of feel compelled to expose the truth.

Other than that, I completely agree with the general points of your message. There are some troubled teens who show violence or hatred toward others. I definitely don't get the impression that this girl was involved with losers like that. Even if she may have experienced some fairly typical teenage angst, it's wholly wrong to suggest that she was anything but a kind, thoughtful teenager. It just makes it all the more sad.

No i am not blaming the driver. Samantha was upset and crying when she walked out onto Imp. Hwy. obviously very upset about what happened earlier in the evening. Who wouldn't be?? She probably wasn't paying attention when she went in the street. I am just saying she was a good person, and people need to quit judging her and her actions and the actions of the driver. If you know the area where this happened you would know the lighting is very poor, and if the sun was setting at the time, then you would know the sun would be in the driver's eyes!! Unfortunate things happen to people and I think it is a shame how everyone wants to talk bad about the poor girl, or the poor driver. Maybe you should read all the bloggs, most of them are pointing the finger at one or the other!

Close relationships sometimes cause problems for you, Gemini, perhaps because the level of intimacy involved makes you feel uncomfortable. Yet this is just what you should concentrate on over the next four weeks; so relax and let your guard down. It's safe to reveal your true self, warts and all.
