Water agencies give salary increases while increasing rates

Full story: Whittier Daily News

While the rest of the country has been stuck in a recession, the head honchos of water agencies across the region have seen their salaries increase as much as 28 percent over the past three years.

Excellent reporting. One aspect was neglected however: MWD has raised WHOLESALE water rates to other water agencies by 15% over 2 years for a man-made drought that a Federal court ruled relied on invalid scientific data about the endangerment of the Sacramento Smelt fish. We have had a normal dry spell followed by a wet year in 2010, but MWD is not going to rescind its rate increase.

Orchard Dale also charges for services they don't perform, for example say my bill is late and due for disconnect, I go in and pay it before it is disconnected and they still charge me a $20.00 reconnect fee even though it was never disconnected. The answer I received from one of their managers.."It's just the way it's always been". Why are they charging the poorest people of the community for services not performed??

"Rowland Water District's Deck said his salary increase was intended to bring him in line with other salaries in the same market."

This is the reason government is so bloated. They are ripping us off with this style of theft from the community.

They should be paid for what they do, not what other people earn. The amount of money they handle is meaningless. Utilities are huge by nature. It does not mean they should get a percentage of the handle. If that were true bank tellers would be the richest people in town.

Apodaca has all the earmarks of a crook. Vote someone else. If their name ends in a vowel, they are propbably members of a tribe that is very comfortable with graft and bribes.

This comment hits the nail on the head: "Absolutely there are abuses," Kuhn said. "There are a lot of people who use the water industry as a stepping stone to go to higher office, or for personal use or greed."

Whittier citizens, consider our council, what one individual meets this definition?

Fine as far as it goes. But you ought to provide a comprehensive list of compensation and travel costs. Otherwise, it looks like you're being selective, and avoiding negative coverage of the water board and water quality board members that advertise heavily in the SGVN papers.

Ed Chavez DOES NOT WORK and is relying in his water board salary. How can a man not work and support himself and family by being a part time board member?

Roger Hernandez in West Covina is another one! Part time Councilman, NO JOB!!

How do they do it people? THEY RELY ON US to pay INCREASED TAXES so they can have pay increases and not work a day in their life.

VOTE THESE CROOKS OUT!!!

I say we vote everyone that voted for salary and perk increases out of office. Thank you Pasadena Star News for letting us know. I have seen my water rates go up on the average about $1,200 per year over the past three years. In this tough economy the burden should be shared by everyone. No one should get to be a fat cat.

I'll bet none of those that actually do the day to day work got raises anywhere near what the crooks er managers got. Thieving crooks. They can justify it all they want, it is wrong. Dead wrong. Its called abuse of power. The city of Bell is not the only place that needs to be investigated.

We pay $38.92 a month for the use a water meter times 12 that equals to 467.02 a year, pretty expensive meter we have in our front yards.Oh yeah my water usage was a whole $9.00,and lets not forget to add utility tax.

They make to much for what they do and we are all paying for it. In private industry I could care less, since I don't have to buy their products if I don't want too. With a utility, I have no choice and I do object to these fat cats feathering their fat nest.
