I dont know that the unemployment rate is really that high or if the tempory layoffs from chrysler drawing unemployment is helping to add to those numbers. Those people are not really without a job they are only off for a few weeks. As far as the guy from subway...do you really get layed off from subway?? I mean no subways have closed in the area so what happened there?? I understand things are getting tight and things look bad for the auto industry but with the temporary layoffs at chrysler and the buyouts from Delphi these things could easily account for the spike in unemployment. Once the Delphi folks run out of unemployment benifits then the numbers will drop again...Of course how will we account for these people being without a job and having no benifits to claim ...well just assumed they moved out of the community. On the upside there are more handy man type services to choose from in the area now...and while im gone on vacation through out the summer it is nice nowing that there are plenty of people to choose from to take care of things for me while Im gone...

Could you be anymore "heartless"??I hope you enjoy your summer vacation. I just hope you won't be going to the foreign countries that have taken all our American jobs and left us losing everything. What you must not understand is that when our factories layoff so many people, yes it does trickle down to even Subway. You just have no idea and I hope you never do. Enjoy your summer.

Kokomo is is going down the drain and it is not coming back. Move on to a new area. I would say you could start robbing banks but they don't have any money either. The Bankers are so crooked they may rob you coming through the door.

Let's blame the leadership of the last 30 years. Everyone knew American manufacturing was too expensive and on the way out the door. No one ever thought to plan for the final stages

Remember the quote" That giant sucking sound you hear is jobs going overseas or down south". How is it that we had a solid economy and once NAFTA is passed manufacturing jobs start leaving and our economy starts going in the toilet? NAFTA was a mistake and we are now paying a hefty price for its passage while Central and other North American countries are flourishing with jobs and manufacturing that used to be ours. The Founding Fathers warned against entangling alliances because they would weaken the country!

NAFTA, passed in 1993 with a DEMOCRAT in the white house, a DEMOCRAT majority in the senate, and a DEMOCRAT majority in the house.

Don't worry, the media will try and use half truths and imply that NAFTA was the fault of Bush and the Gingrich lead congress.

I have 2 bachelors degrees & I am having a very hard time getting a job. Even as a waitress in/around Kokomo. I have applied all over fort wayne, indianapolis, louisville & other cities.
Whoever said the thing about Subway really has no idea what it is like in Kokomo. It's not all about Chrysler. Many factories like Gerber Plumbing Fixtures, they went from having hundred+ employees to having 5 and they are about to get rid of those 5 too. The whole factory is closing. The Kroger on 31 CLOSED, everything is closing.

so much for "trickle-down economics". The rich have gotten richer for the last 8 years, and apparently it is not "trickling down"!Also, THANKS A LOT CLINTON! for signing NAFTA and sending millions of jobs out of the country!

Washington needs to lower the corporate tax to 12.5 from 35%. Less government spending, lower taxes create an enviroment that produces JOBS. Unions can be more competitive also. Who WOULD open a business with our tax & labor cost situation. And just wait til they get hit with the energy costs, more disincentive! Vote out those power hungry politicans. Republicans and Democrats! Let mismanaged companies fail. The demand IS here. They will be bought up, restructured and jobs will come back. We need less government control. They are NOT HELPING!

Well dont get me wrong I can understand and empathize with the situation in and around cities like Kokomo. However I am reminded of the Horse and Buggy Whip company. These guys made the best horse whips in the country..maybe even the world.Business was booming, all the nearby towns folks had good jobs..life was good. Then a curious thing happen. The automobile was invented. Soon the horse whip company had no more customers. But life was getting better for the areas the automobile companies decided to build their factories. The economy for the horse whip community was terrible, unemployment was on the rise and in double digits. The US economy was shaken during the 70's the auto industry seen for the first time foreign cars were competing and becoming in some cases favored over the gas consuming american autos. I personally think the american made autos are the better choice for more than one reason. However the shift in the economy was starting to take shape...even back then. Industries change, products to be produce change..just like the Whip company gave way to auto companies...so to will the auto companies give way to other higher industrial goods...The thing we must do as families and communities is to prepare ourselves for that future and make sure that we a viable choice for these future jobs.

Actually Hitler was a socialist...National Socialist Workers Party...sound familiar? Im sorry you must be too stupid to crack a history book.

Obama sucks up to the Unions just as hitler sucked up to workers, hitler nationalized banks and healthcare, Obama is on his way with the banks and now wants healthcare.

Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.

You must be to stupid to realize that I stated that Limbaugh's "manner" (open a dictionary) is like Hitler's. The banks are doing so well aren't they. The lack of health care for non-wealthy americans doesn't matter to you either. We are they only non-third world country without national health care. The unemployed in Kokomo know what it feels like to be without health care.

I am from Kokomo and Unemployed too. I worked at Delphi for 15 years as a contract worker and was laid off in Jan. 2006, I found a job in West Lafayette in April of 2007, I worked contract for Caterpillar, but now I have been laid off again in Feb. 2009. There are no jobs out there anywhere, anyway for the kind of work I do. (CAD Design)
