Just a question from somebody that hasn't been to Eureka in awhile. At Coopers Gulch you have two softball diamonds, a building and play area and a disc golf course that goes around that outside of the ball fields. Where are they installing this skate park?

"We're very excited about it finally going through," said Elizabeth Deny, an employee of the Pro Sports Center, which donated $1,000 Wednesday."

Yea. I wonder how many skateboards Pro Sport needs to sell to get their $1,000 back? Probably about 4.

I believe it's going to be located on the north side of the northerly softball park near the creek. It of course wouldn't make sense to build the skate park over at the 20-30 playground where there's lots of space and accomplish at least two goals:

Put the facility in an area where there are lots of kids and foster integraion of different races and cultures.

This is just like building the Adorni Center on the bay. The Adorni project was supposedly requested by Harry Adorni to benefit youth north of Fourth Street. Many citizens requested of the City of Eureka to not abide by that particular requirement because most of the youth live south of Fourth Street.

Well, here they go again. How many kids who will use the skate park live nearby? Brilliant.

@Droidamus,

When you first drive in to the park and you get to the parking lot, the park is located just right of that. If you were a right fielder on the first softball field and you were facing home plate, you'd look to your left and see the park. It's a small area but it's big enough for the park.

@Reader,

Why do you and others complain so much. It's getting built. Kids will get there. Just be happy.

That's where I thought it was anon. But look at the City of Eureka. Have you ever noticed where schools were located? There's no more than a mile between each school. Where are all of the closed schools? Where's the major population of children who will use the park?

The only safe way for them to get to Cooper Gulch is by car. Personally I thought the best site would have been a portion of the parking lot at the Carson Memorial Building
s teem center. There are safe streets for kids to bicycle to the center.

I'm not complaining. I'm merely stating a fact that the location was not very well thought out.

Ya... ain't it grand?

Skate while your life fades away.

I believe Caesar did something similar while Rome burned. He played an electric fiddle, or something like that while ice skating in the Sahara?

Okay, ya! A bit heavy. We do need our entertainment.

So, has the City installed a camera, linked online to parents and the police?

We'll need to catch the ever present taggers who wish to leave their mark on their new territory, like a dog peeing on his.

How about the fights and inevitable dope dealing that will take place?

Many cities have experienced just the things that I just mentioned. Yes, up to and including murder. Placer County and Sonoma County

Maybe we need more midnight basketball! It would have been cheaper. Ring any bells?

Not living in Eureka anymore I can't be sure but from what a previous poster said I believe the skate park will be past the 18th hole by the parking lot so it shouldn't effect it at all. Am I right?

I believe so... from what I recall from the Parks and Open Space Commission meeting. Not sure where 18 is. I do know the Disc Golfers were included in the planning.

Cool! I hope that is correct!
Now that the weather is getting better and it is staying lighter later in the evening I like to get out there and get a little excercise throwing the disc around. More people using the park will be a good thing and will hopefully drive out some of the homeless that you inevitably encounter while playing the course.

Just having the disc course there has made a huge improvement.

How much money will it cost the City just for insurance? Someone mentioned a figure at the City Council Meeting - a very high figure. Does anybody here know the answer?

How many skaters will be wearing protective head gear and knee and elbow pads? Any of them?

All Obots wear kneepads. Protective head gear is useless and too late.

There is no cost for insurance.
When the park was first proposed back in 89 the insurance estimate was nearly a quarter of a million a year.(I think that is the number you heard) Since then a law has been passed that essentially states that anybody skateboarding or engaing in other high risks sports does so at their own risk.
So long as the City puts a fence around the park requires protective equipment and enforces it (writes tickets), then liability is not an issue.(supposedly)
As for people wearing helmets, a lot of people at the Arcata park are pretty good about wearing helmets. There are always some who don't but that's their choice, and their fine or head injury if they get caught, or injured.

What is the obsession with meth all about?

I see people interjecting meth comments into threads, out of left field all over this forum...

Just curious.

Still who's going to pay when somebody cracks their dome?...Cement is hard and cheap to pour but that little tiny bump caused my client to loose a career as skate boarder, now the jury will cry a little and then show me the money...

Daily Horoscope for January 7

Sagittarius

If you have any worries or problems today, a close colleague could have the answers you seek. Work will be satisfying, and anything to do with children should be very rewarding today. There could be friction with a relative, but it's nothing serious and things will sort themselves out in due course. Again, you must pay attention to your health, Saggitarius: skin infections are a strong possibility at the moment.
