Reguardless of what they make, they are the ones who applied for that position and knew what the pay and benefits were before accepting the job. Everyone who works anywhere thinks they do not make enough money. That's life!

Despite the fact that they applied for the position and having been a dispatcher myself, I can tell you it is a thankless job and they deserve every penny they get and more. Sitting on the outside looking in, it is easy for some of you to critize them and say they knew what they were getting into. Well I can tell you that 99.9% of the time they didn't know how much stress came with the job and how ungrateful and nasty people can be sometimes. They also have times where they see the very best of people. But trying checking the lose of life of a friend or maybe a child at the door before going home. It is easier said than done. So before you pass judgement on them try walking a couple miles in their shoes and let us see if you think they deserve the pay the get.

Everyone in this thread who thinks Dispatchers are underpaid - go ahead and shoot em a 20 every week out of your own pocket. After all they work for you right? It's always easy to say someone should get more money when we don't have to pay them - at least in the direct sense.

Dispatchers are what I like to call the "unseen heros". A lot of people think that dispatchers just sit on their butts for hours at a time and thats all there is to it. Well from personal experience I'd like to let you all in on a little secret. Put yourself in the shoes of being the person on the phone who is talking to a woman who is holding her dying mother. A dispatchers job is to talk to this woman, who will obviously be in the middle of a complete break down, to get information about where they are and information on the patient, getting the squad and police dispatched out to the promply and safely. Also in some cases they talk the person on the phone through things like CPR. Dispatchers also look out for every single officer that rides our roads at 3am. They protect them by knowing where they are, how long they've been there, and will be able to send the apporiate units to them if an emergency occurs. So when you look thru that window at the dispatchers "just sitting there" remember that one day it may be you on the other side of that phone call and it will be that dispatcher that saves you, or you mother, or your child from choaking. Whatever the case may be the dispatchers are trained and prepared to handle it. They probably are under paid but you're right they took the job. But that damn sure deserve more respect than that.
