Hi what do you think about finding a place to have a pool for all of us and the children?

Town Hill perfect for a pool and club house. Oh and a kiddie pool.
We could pay for it in 5 years if we recend the boat tax,$100,000.00 per year. We could have swim teams, diving teams, and healthy kids who stay out of the Potomac and out of trouble. We could have families together. Small charge daily or monthly or yearly membership. Fees would pay for lifeguards and maintenance.
Go for it.

You may have $100,000 the first year, then maybe $50,000 the second year, and will be lucky if any boats are left by the third year.

Each boater spends an average of $5,000-15,000 per year or more in this community. They rent slips, buy gas, eat in the restaurants, go the the grocery store, shop at the convenience store, buy parts, etc. With gas at $4 per gallon on the water and climbing, it will be hard enough to afford to continue boating. You add that tax and I guarantee my boat will be moved to Cobb Island or elsewhere before you can blink an eye. I am not the only one. The boat tax will be economic disaster.

If you bring back the boat tax, you had better start spending a lot of your own money in town, or many of your neighbors will soon be out jobs.

I like the sound of a pool, with possibly tennis courts, but like the idea of maybe using another location other than Town Hill. How about the Lions Club location. Having it used for for both Lions Club and Pool/Athletic events. I think Town Hill should be kept for Market Days and other events. If a pool is put in there it would use too much space and detract from the stage area. The pool would probably be used by people on mostly golf carts and bikes, so I don't think a large parking area would be needed. Opinions/suggestions?

Hi again, I agree that the pool and area for play should be at the large parking area across from the fisheries comm. at the corner of Wilder and Taylor NOT not on the hill. I think there being a Grand hotel back on the hill for our visitors and friends would go a long way to making our town the beautiful lovely place it use to be.I also agree the potomac river is not the place for anyone to swim in as it will never be as before.I think with having the space on the corner with many things to do will go a long way to help all of us. Thanks for being you.

Also sounds good idea to ask Lion's Club if they agree. They can make boocoos money for snacks an such for the club. I believe underground pools and not really a whole lot of money and like was said the adimiting fees will soon have it paid for.

Concerned citzen, and Scoobdoo, I think we are on to something. Our kids are missing so much.
We need someone to champion this idea. Several optins for space are suggested, and all are good.
Get a momentum going. We can do it.
Mr Boater where does all your money go, maybe the owner of the marinas??? How much does the town really get from the boaters. If what you say is true, all the boats in town spend 5 to 15 thou, in Colonial Beach. Then we dont need to reverse the tax on boats. We should have alllllll that money in the bank. So lets start building the pool. Thank you boaters.

If we could get the commitment of a location (land) from town, we could possibly get a donation fund going. I believe there are people and businesses in our town that are willing to donate to a good cause such as this.

Pools can be great fun, but are expensive to run. The insurance alone is quite costly. In addition there are is maintenance, lifeguards, and pool management costs. Some wealthy counties with a very big tax base have public pools, but in recent years many have had funding significantly cut. Most pools are privately owned and funded through memberships. I have belonged to these pools. The yearly cost per family, if you can maintain a strong membership of 200-300 families is around $350. Are you looking to pay for a pool and its annual costs yourself, or do you want someone else to pay for it?

“Mr Boater where does all your money go, maybe the owner of the marinas??? How much does the town really get from the boaters.”

Boater’s money is spent at more than just marinas. It is spent all over town. Most of these businesses are low margin, where only a small fraction of gross receipts is actual profit. Profit is good. It is taxed by the federal, state and local governments. Owners save some of the profit, reinvest some in their business, and spend the remainder on their own houses, food, clothes, cars, etc. All of which is again taxed. The money that is not profit is spent on business expenses such as local business taxes. The money also is spent paying the salaries of your neighbors and friends who work for these businesses. These employees in turn spend their portion of the boater’s money on their own houses, food, clothes, and cars. Local businesses also employ local electricians, plumbers, and carpenters to help maintain the business. The boaters money helps to fuel your local economy. You can try to tax them directly, and risk losing them, or you can let them spread their money throughout the local economy.

Hi United.Colonial Beach had a huge pool when the Hotel was on the hill.I checked earlier and a 40-20 ft. was $40,000.We had a huge yard sale on the hill a few years ago to help with the 911 and we raised over$17,000 It was great.Colonial Beach People can Do anything we make up our minds to get done. Beleive me.If most of the town would have a sale in their yards we could probably pay for the pool right away.About the land. All town owned. There would be no problem to find someone to build a Hotel back on the hill.A beautiful Grand one with a porch all the way across the front. The land across from the fisheries is of no use and is perfect for a pool and recrection area.Down at the Lion,s as was mentioned would be totally great for a children's place including a SKATE BOARD PARK. I have to go to somewhere real soon so I will see how it goes when I return.

Minature golf would also be a great idea too. It could even operate on weekends in the off season.

You all have some really good ideas. I hope you take this further than these forums and be vocal to the town administration and council.

At least it is good to hear some positive comments on this forum, instead of negativity. And Mr. Boater, how do you think churches get built? With people working hard, working together, on building donation funds. There are some people in this town that I believe would donate some large amounts of cash to a positive cause, that would benefit a large group of people.

I also will be going away for a while but want to see what can be done toward this effort when I return. I think this would benefit the whole community, where a skate board park would benefit only a small percentage.

I don't want to burst anyone's bubbles on the pool. It is a great idea. The only thing is, back years ago when we had the Jaycees, we used to raise money to have a pool built at the Lion's Club. We raised money, along with the community, not sure where it went to and as you can see, the pool was never built. It would be great to try this again.

That's the point, this wouldn't be for the children, it would be for all ages. It would be a center for adults also. I think this would get more support. Not just a pool, tennis courts, basketball, multi-use. We would need suggestions and input.

The pool and club house with a kitchen to serve fast food (sandwiches, drinks etc; like a Subway) would serve all residens of the Beach. Meetings, games, card tables, a real meeting place for all ages. Maybe everyone will realize the old and the young are not to different.
Money made on food, membership, daily charges, would go toward maintenance. Free membership to those who will work for 3 hrs a day 3 days a week.
Concerned, I agree on all you said.
This could be for everyone. Not just a few.
WOW I am planning way ahead, maybe I am dreaming and will wake up to reality soon.
