Google Wal Mart Katrina hero

National News is lauding Wal Mart as one of the true heroes of Katrina. How they gave supplies to the people immediately after the storm.

Who received these supplies? I rode the storm out in the Kiln and no supplies were given to us.

As far as breaking into the pharmacy first of all I don't think the hospital could accept said drugs and if I recall the hoospital was at ground zero just like the rest of us. Not is a position to function.

the hospital did indeed function. they set up tents and yes, the drugs from many pharmacies were collected and utilized by the hospital.

I can assure you...as a front line officer during that storm one of the first things we did as soon as we were able, we went to HMC and got Dr. Appleyard and a male nurse to go with us as we got the narcotic drugs fron several of the local pharmacy's.
They were turned over to the hospital to use.

Yes under those circumstances they could accept them but not from just anyone.

my perspective.... the TRUE heroes were the first responders, FD-PD-EMS.... the citizens, who in the immediate aftermath, took charge, risked their lives and did what had to be done, for themselves and those around them. When I spoke to Corporate Wal-Mart beginning the day after the storm, I was told that donations would only be made through non-profit entities, after damage was assessed. The Wal-Marts in other close-by areas that were not damaged would not assist either, when asked to donate water, socks, cereal bars, gatorade, blankets or shoes. So, IMO, our PEOPLE were and remain the true heroes.

Walmart a hero, now that's rich. They wanted to open as soon as possible so they could take your money i.e. those great debit cards, red cross money, etc.. and increase there profit. They saw an opportunity to make lots of money so they put up tents because and sold merchandise so they can continue to make money "greatest show on earth, only thing missing were clowns and animals". Anyone that knows any different please let me know. Can't stand walmart!! Kmart doesn't have a prayer, since walmart is the only grocery store, it's good to be king in the BAY.

I imagine they did want to reopen asap. I was told Walmart had storm surge to the tops of the freezer compartments, so they lost alot just like everyone else in Hancock. What on earth would people in Hancock County have done if Walmart had not quickly reopened and sold necessities? When did being successful in business and making a profit become a crime in America? And, in case you are wondering, I do not work for them, nor does anyone in my family.

Read what you quoted. wondering who said you or your family worked for them. To answer your question I guess if walmart hadn't opened, I still would have stood in line where the all of the different Church groups, volunteers, red cross, etc... gave out the necessities without having to pay for them until I got back on my own two feet "the real heroes"

The first deliveries of food, clothing, medical supplies, etc. arrived on Walmart, Home Depot, and Lowes trucks days before FEMA released their supplies from their 'safe distance' staging area. As soon as a route was open, truckloads of water, food, clothing, etc. donated from a variety of sources were trucked in without charge, piggybacking their own loads or in dedicated trucks. Yes, they are heroes of the storm. That doesn't mean I want to make groceries there. Doesn't mean I want to eat pickled meat ('solution added'). But because they answered the call when needed, we have a recovering community where options will continue to grow, and Walmart will play their part.
