Thinking of moving to Cumberland

The AMC Theatre does have air conditioning and they run the ceiling fans also. The entire mall is air conditioned. We just had a Kohl's open up in LaVale this week...I'm hoping it's a start for us. But, with the economy the way it is in the US right now....I just don't know.

Hi. I am new to the Cumberland area and have a 4 month old. I am a say at home mom who would LOVE to find some other moms to hang out with. Does anyonew know any playgroups or other such things I can get involved in? thanks for your help

You are welcomed here. Too many people move here and after the honeymoon is over, they want to start the changes. They want a Star Bucks, and all the amenities of larger cities. People in Cumberland are more rural and are happy without all of the trappings of larger areas. All we want are more jobs. We appreciate the green spaces and do not want large tracks of housing developments gobbling them up. so if you are happy with that, welcome.

I work 2 hours away and wouldn't think of moving out of this town. 17 years of commuting and 10 to go. Time flies when you are having fun.

I wouldn't do it again. I lived in and around Cumberland for a couple of years and I can say it's pretty. I loved living in the countryside out of town. But that's about it. Ancient housing stock. Few shopping and dining options. Jobs are practically nonexistent if you look beyond nursing homes, WalMart, the prisons and a couple call centers. Be honest. Prisons get built in desperate places and call centers are placed in communities with no economic base. There IS an arts community in Cumberland. The Arts Council rocks and I miss it. Education is sorely lacking. The county BOE is run by a group from a narrow region that manages to vote as a block. Southsiders in Cumberland hate Northsiders. Northsiders hate Southsiders. Together, they hate everyone else. Why do I use the word hate? In 4 years I heard it more than in my previous 40. Two high schools with 2000 student capacity run at half that because, well, because of homecoming. High school football is a centerpiece but the kids can't have the books they need. Educated people leave in huge numbers. Someone made a comment above about redneck Republicans and I have to say that was dead on. These are the people who made W a winner, but they'd be sent away to clean the stables in a heartbeat. Tragic.

Bottom line: Narrow, isolated, going nowhere and damn proud of it.

Is there a Starbucks in Cumberland? What about Outback, Olive Garden, and other good restaurants?

Are there growing businesses in Allegany County? I thought I heard that some businesses are big and growing. Is Kelly-Springfield still there? Is the C & O railroad still there? Are they hiring?

To Miller in Baltimore:

I would not want to live in crime capital of the U.S.A. Batimore,for all the money in the world.You can say what you want about W,because everyone knows most Baltimorons voted for USAMA OBAMA the losers president. I would rather be a redneck republican than a baby killing democrat.
The students in cumberland learn more in one day ,than those in Baltimore in a month--thats a fact! Please stay there!

What's the best way to relocate to Cumberland, MD area? Find a job first? Should you just pick up and move and look for work when you arrive in town?

Is there a Starbucks and Olive Garden or Outback? What about minor league baseball? What about college basketball? What about the opera, the theater, and ballet? What about rock concerts coming to town?

I cant believe some of these posts about my little part of the globe that I call home. Its seems as though the negatives are coming from people who have visited Western MD. briefly if at all and one post I believe was basing their opinion on a Washington post article? As far as abu grahaib goes, NONE of the individuals responsible or with the 502nd MP company were from Cumberland, they just happen to be stationed here. Above all, who cares and their are tirds no matter where one lives. To sum it up, I've traveled and there is no place I'd rather call home. Yes our job market sucks, but the entire nations economy sucks at present

Oh. and above all, I dont have to sit in traffic daily nor dodge bullets while walking down the street.

Moving to the Cumberland/Frostburg area in November. Are there in sections of either of these towns or areas that are higher in crime or should be avoided when relocating?

Is it me or does everyone who defends this hell hole miss the spelling of at least one word?

Let us review. It is not Tird. It is Turd. Driving 70 or more miles to work is not "commuting".

Cumberland is NOT RURAL. Cumberland is an isolated urban mess with an undereducated population, a long-gone economic base, and a heroin problem. That's how I spell Hopeless. Granted the surrounding country is rural and pretty. I physically loved living there, but it was a psychic hell.
