4 About a month ago, there was a car fire on the 18-Mile stretch. I stopped to help the motorist because it was in the construction zone where the lanes are not separated. Good thing, because he did not have a phone. I called 9-1-1. Traffic was chaotic because there was no police or fire fighters on scene yet to handle traffic control. People were not slowing down, and they were driving right through the smoke. A MCSO patrol car passed us Southbound. The car said "Key Largo Supervisor" on the front fender. Aside from the fire and black smoke which should have made things obvious, I attemtped to waive down the deputy. The deputy was on his cell-phone. He just looked at me and drove right by. Now, I realize this occurred in Dade County, but this was not a law enforcement matter. It was a safety matter. I, and two other civilians, were risking our lives trying to help this guy, and this deputy could not take a few minutes out of his life to pull over and turn his strobe lights on to slow traffic down until FHP and the fire department arrived. And God forbid he get out of his air conditioned car and try to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher! My point? Show me you are willing to do more than the absolute minimum that is required of you as a police officer. Until then, you deserve no raise from my tax dollars. |

1 Many of these untruths are being spread by the law enforcement union - the FOP. For instance, no one has proposed taking away vacation; comp awarded at 1.5 hours after rolling over is federally mandated - no one is talking about taking that away; everyone got their holiday pay and vacation pay - it wasn't withheld. Who are you and what the heck are you talking about? You obviously don't work for the Sheriff's Office or you would know it is all bunk. Sheriff Peryam offered the union a four percent raise, plus a two percent bonus. The corrections union was smart enough to take it. They knew it was a good offer under current conditions. The FOP rejected it, and now they are crying foul? What's up with that? |

1 Under the current economic crisis, the FOP DECLINED a 6% raise???? There are some departments making pay CUTS, and the FOP DECLINES a 6% raise. This has got to be one of the stupidest things I've read in a long time. Who the hell is making these decisions for the FOP? Is this the result of a vote by MCSO FOP members at an FOP meeting? If so, they have absolutely no leg to stand on and no right to complain. That's just plain dumb. |

1 2. Change the economic structure of the sheriff's office to create a mechanism to run it more efficiently. 3. This Economic change would give the Deputies a long awaited raise up to 10%. 4. Get rid of the Helicopter from the Sheriff's bankroll. 5. Get better healsth insurance. 6. Improve the deputies work condirions and benifits overall. Vacation, overtime etc.. These were the promises he campaigned to the FOP! Yep we have an economy which is in trouble. When the economy and tax rolls were stuffed all they did was spend spend spend but not on the deputies. |

2 When the economy was "stuffed" as you call it, Sheriff Roth signed off on an FOP plan to raise line-level deputy salaries as much as 30% over three years, depending on the individual deputy's length of employment. As planned, deputies saw a significant raise over the 3 years. Near the end of the contract, the economy dumped and the County slashed the Sheriff's budget, preventing another similar 3 year contract. The FOP (and Sgt Hull) got greedy and pushed for another 3 year contract with similar salary increases. When Roth declined, the FOP and unaware deputies blamed Roth. How can you blame a Sheriff for these things when the money to support it did not exist? However, that being said, there are some things that should be rectified. No one, and I mean NO ONE in the Sheriff's Office should make more than the Sheriff. I believe there are 2, 3, maybe 4 people making more than the Sheriff. What sense does that make? Take home cars should be eliminated from non-sworn employees. If you don't carry a gun and can't respond to calls (or are not willing to), you should not be in a take-home car. At the end of the budget year, money should NEVER be given back to the County. And yes, the claims in the original post of this thread are B.S. |

3 The county build some of the funding into the Sheriff's budget for opertions and maintenance, not taking anything away from employees. The rest of the funding for the helicopter is in the county's budget. It is easy to ask for all the increased benefits. It is another thing to come up with a concrete plan which outlines how to pay for them. Rant and rave all you want, but even if you did cut top adminstrators, their salaries are a drop in the bucket when it comes to funding all the things you are asking for. Salary increases cost millions of dollars, not several hundred thousand. And it is easy to ask for "better health insurance". More difficult to actually find it. Why don't you try and find better insurance that is actually affordable and that will take on employees who have pre-existing medical conditions? Because otherwise, we'll have a whole lot of employees who are screwed by the transition. I do find it interesting in these posts how some people, when presented with a truth that contradicts their fiction, resort to using nasty comments and ugly language instead of arguing their point like rational human beings. These are the same people who won't every be happy, no matter what, and who resort to lies and exaggeration in an attempt to "stir the pot". |

5 Gotta love the anonymity of the internet. How about not being a gutless coward and addressing those thoughts directly with your administration. My concern is that there are immature racists like you working our streets. As long as deputies like you act in this manner, I will NEVER support more of my tax dollars going toward your salaries. Way to screw it up for everyone. |
