Does anyone know the status of The Dalles getting a Super Wal-Mart? I hope it is still a go.

From what I understand, this is the reason for the round abouts they have planned for the west end of town. Those will be a nightmare for bus drivers who are trying to safely get the children to and from school. Also, the reason for the city taking property from commercial property owners on w second street. Some of these people are retired individuals who are living on the income they make from these properties and the offer given for these properties is a joke. They should at least be offered an amount that would justify giving up their income that is stustaining their independant living abilities. Don't mistake me, I am all for Walmart Superstore but not if getting it is going to destroy our neighbors ability to be independant in retirement.

for stacey, do not be stupid. the property was bought out of receivership from northwest aluminum who is now bankrupt. as far as traffic goes, there is no houses at all over there it is all commercial property, no houses no schools, no school bus, no children. If you live in portland and not the dalles shut up.

Wal-Mart is not needed in the Dalles whatsoever. The Dalles Fred Meyer does so much for the community and takes care of their customers very well. I understand it is nice to have other places to shop but honestly, a freaking Wal-Mart? We need a Winco or Costco much more. Cash and Carry is the only bulk supplier and they are not made for residential shoppers. Wal-Mart will not bring jobs to the Dalles. The entire management staff will be made up of transfer workers and they will only hire for minimum wage jobs. What does this mean? Wal-Mart will be ran by people who do not understand the Dalles and do not know its people. And the people who will work there? They will be inexperienced and shady. Typical Wal-Mart associates if you ask any EDUCATED and EXPERIENCED shoppers. AS someone who's spent his entire 45 years in retail. This is a giant insult when people try to justify the opening of Wal-Mart when they know nothing of the company that deflates the U.S. Dollar and gives nothing back to the consumers. Only the corporate fat cats benefit from the opening and everyone is stupid enough to throw their money as they screw over manufacturers and foreign countries. You people make me sick!

there are houses over on this side of W 2nd that have family's that cant really afford to relocate and I have personally watched how Wal-Mart has destroyed a small town in Kansas and as a former employee of Wal-Mart I would not ever work for them again let alone shop there

I'll gladly drive from HR to The Dalles to shop at Wal-Mart.
I'm thankful we have the freedom to choose....What we say and what we do.
Here in The Gorge, we have few choices to shop. Many of us would rather shop in some of the stores that are in the Portland area but it gets pricey to make the drive.
***For those out there that are anti Wal-mart, please consider others before making raging comments. Be thankful your freedom to NOT shop will still be there the next time you get tempted to run into Wa-Mart for a quick purchase.
