The painful price to keep on truckin'

Full story: Baltimore Sun

For most Maryland drivers, the $4-a-gallon fill-up is still a dire prediction. But for those who depend on diesel to power their trucks and tractors and family cars, four-buck fuel has been a fact of life since ...

Unfortunatley, the liberal Democrats that run MD and the US congress are too short-sighted to offer an real solutions to these problems that plague regular Americans.
We should be:
-Maximizing domestic oil extraction by drilling in ANWR and off the gulf coast
-Building more refineries
-Building more nuclear power, and wind-power plants (clean energy from the wind that is opposed by people like the Hero of Chappaquiddik, Ted Kennedy because he doesn't want to see windmills 20 miles offshore from his oceanfront estate.)
-Developing new technologies

Only by doing all of these can we become energy independent and eliminate the days of $4+ gas.

The failing dollar is half the cost increase seen in fuel but as long as we need to service a war based on debt, the lower the dollar will go and the more fuel (and food!) will climb. End this wasteful war!

I think what needs to happen is we need to enact a gas tax holiday for the summer so that the average consumer can at least have enough dollars and cents to go on vacation.

I really do wish President Bush would stop thinking about the world for a minute and think about us.

I'm a conservative and this is what I believe in.

800,00 pounds seems like a lot for a truck to weigh, I thought the maximium weight allowed was 80,000 pounds.

They got all of us by the balls. I drove for NPME for 18 years and every time the fuel went up there was a fuel surcharge added to the bill. The consumer pays the price. Independent truckers should all join the Teamsters or form an Independent truckers union. You must stick together on things like this or you have no authority against the oil companys. It really should be like it use to be when diesel was CHEAPER than gasoline. $1.30 increase in a year is a SIN. What the oil companys are doing is no different than if the US took over Iraq and all its oil and property. And told the world that it is now ours. The GREED will come back on you BIG OIL.

If the truckers would actually drive the speed limit they would save a lot of money. Every one in this area knows how they drive - like lunatics.

Its a damn shame these truckers that we so readily depend on for our goods have to pay these prices to earn a living. It's bad enough the general public pays these gas prices. I'm hoping the day comes all these truckers unite together an park these rigs for a few days showing this government how important they are.

"Get serious"- be for real!
What I do know is that MOST truckers are safer than anyone of you car / SUV "I own the friggin road' driving people. I would rather be STUCK behind a truck than any one of the "get the hell out of my way before I run yuo off the road" people.
When the hell are you people going to learn that if it weren't for trucks and truck drivers you would not be able to walk into the store at YOUR conveinience and grab your precious little goodies off of store shelves! I bet you'll be crying when you have to order everything on line and actually have to wait for your double, double expresso latte schmatte! More than likely someone in a rig would have something to do with it getting to you anyhow-even if it is cold and moldy by the time you get it.
Have some respect for others on the road people. If you see a trucker driving recklessly report them ASAP and if you see anyone in any other vehicle report them too. Stop complaining and do something!

Lisa -
Did you read anywhere that I defended car/SUV drivers???? NOT AT ALL. I totally agree they are bigger idiots, especially the soccer mom in the Expedition or Yukon blabbing on the cell phone . But I have seen many a truck on I-95 doing 75+ a few feet off the tail of the car in front of them cutting in and out of traffic. And I have certainly called some in. I would say the worst are not the long haul drivers is it's the one's with empty dump trucks. I have seen them race each other and usually the license plates are so crapped out you can't make them out.

Energy Truth is a misnomer, kinda' like a swift boat veteran for truth, he's neither swift nor truthful. FACT- Diesel requires 1/2 of the refining effort of gas. FACT- oil is shipped as crude, the refineries are here. FACT- oil PROFITS are at an All time high,, not just revenue. They are maximizing profits at your expense. Ask our failed oilman president who's got us astride the worlds 2nd largest reserves why prices are up. Like its really Ted Kennedy's fault. I guess if you scream loud enough, people may look past the fact that you're a complete asshat.

FACT - Profits are at an all time high because the quantity of oil sold keeps increasing. Profit margins are still the same.

Joe- judging from your comments (and your obviopus suffering from Bush-derrangement syndrome), I'll assume that you are not very educated and do not understand what a profit margin is, so here's an example:
I sell widgets at $110 and the cost me $100 to produce. My profit is $10 per widget. My profit margin is 10%.

Now let's assume the cost of my materials goes up and now it costs me $200 to produce a widget. I change my price to $220. My profit per widget is $20.
GOOD GOD CALL IN THE POLITICIANS TO EXAMINE MY WINDFALL PROFITS THAT HAVE DOUBLED. IT'S A CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY. But wait, my profit margin is still 10%, nothing has changed.

This is exactly what has happened with oil companies. For all their efforts - finding oil, extracting it, shipping it, refining it and getting it to you the consumer, they make about 8 cents per gallon. Greedy democrat liberal politicians do absolutely nothing and they get about 50 cents per gallon in taxes. So who should be be angry at here?

Nice try at the 3 card-Monte economics. It might work if DEMAND WEREN'T ACTUALLY DOWN 4% from last year and SUPPLIES (production worldwide)WERE ACTUALLY UP 3.3%. So stick yer' market forces tight in a dark space, Adam Smith; see link http://www.reason.com/news/show/125414.html Oil has been commoditized by speculators who buy futures and manipulate markets to keep prices high to protect their bets, guess evereyone has forgotten Enorn and their little roach buddies who scurried when the lights were turn on (briefly), I say good day, asshat.

And lastly, if you think this country is run by a "liberal cabal", you're truly as stupid as you sound. look at the ditch we're in after the last 8 years, oh, and hope your kids will like their posting in Iran,

Daily Horoscope for December 19

Virgo

Someone is easily angered today, and you'll want to tiptoe around them at every opportunity. They might be on the defensive and imagine that you're getting at them all the time, or they could be quick to point the finger of blame straight at you. It won't be an easy day, but try not to get swept up in the emotional dramas that are swirling around you. They'll only exhaust you.
