Does anybody really think Hawaii can
afford a 5.4 billion dollar rail
construction project? Washington is
going to pay the bill? Oh, OK.
That'll work.

It is just Honolulu and the feds have yet to kick in anything other than an ok and few million for some studies. Can they afford it? Nope but that won';t stop them from surging uncontrollably ahead on it. Lots and lots of favors need to be paid back...

"willie" Aloha. I have said many times, just a 4 time tourist, How can a rail system possibly help Oahu. To start with, Oahu, we think, is over-populated. Oahu has great transportation, the Bus, taxis, the smaller tourist buses, etc. Peoples property is going to be taken, more conguestion, where will people park, if you live close, YES, you can walk, tourist won't take the rail to Ala Moana as they still have to take a cab to their hotel, From a tourist point of view, it makes no sense. Oahu is a small island and keep concreting Oahu and you will find out tourists will stop coming. Not to mention the thoughts of the people that live there. You can only concrete so much of a beautiful tropical island before it loses all of its island appeal. AND, we think Oahu has reached that.

Welcome to the E ride to nowhere.

drive to kapolei wonderland. Park your car

then take the E ride to why-park-hoo. Get off the E Ride, take The Bus through traffic
If the Bus is crowded stand up and amuse yourself

once in town get on anther Bus to get real close to where you want to go

Get off The Bus then walk to your Final Destination
All in about 1.5 hours or more

Now that was fun.

Repeat the same after work

The bonus is each tax payer will fork out 20k dollars just for this wonderful E ride to Nowhere.

The Unions want to thank Mufi for his effort and lies to make this all happen.
We really need Mufi to take over Inouye's position in congress to give us more E rides

All hail to the victor
We are going to get Railed up the you know where

What all seem to be missing is that this is Hawaii. It will be build. People will use it. And then some nut group will go to court and take it all away.

Ask Superferry.

And to all you who say we don't need it, remember that Oahu hasn't expanded roadway capacity in decades (yes, DECADES) while population has steadily grown. Soon you will be able to walk from Kapolei to Honolulu faster than driving.

That is why paving more roads is not the solution. You've just made the biggest argument for rail. Getting tourists to use rail is not the primary benefit, its for the work commuters.

Maybe Washington doesn't know that most Hawaii residents oppose building a railroad to carry 27 shoppers from Kapolei to Ala Moana Shopping Center and back home... at a cost of nearly $10 billion (by the time it is built).

"He (Mufi) said the city is awaiting final state approval of an environmental impact statement and then a federal record of decision before ground can be broken".

Those who plan on filing lawsuits challenging the EIS are also awaiting final approval of the EIS before they can file. They cannot file before then because the EIS is still a "draft". I'll be very surprised if they've broken ground by Dec 2010, let alone this year.

They will be in court before the first shovel of dirt is turned, count on it.

I guess some uneducated folks believe it is OK as long as "Washington" is paying for it ... as if none of those funds come from us.

I'm told that surveys show that there are more than a dozen Kapolei residents who could ride the rail to work at Ala Moana Shopping Center, but seven of them said they would not give up their SUVs.

i hope this rail gets built all across the island. this place needs something modern in the transportation realm.

everything here is so outdated and ridiculously antique, this island metality is so closed off to the outside world, everyones minds are closed to the fact that Hawaii is falling behind!

i tell you, although i was born and raised here, i went to college on the mainland and traveled the world. i realize that Hawaii can't last unless we take steps to catch up to the rest of the world. but the thing is, those people in charge don't want to catch up with the rest of the world and don't realize that they are digging the grave deeper for future generations! it's so sad to see my islands go down this path.

a bunch of dumb people in groups is truly destructive. Go Rail!

Without a fair and open competition among all qualified rail suppliers for the system's technology, we can expect something less than optimum bids from the three interested steel wheel on steel rail suppliers. The only chance for a real competition that will bring the best system at the best price is for the City Council to deny the city's request for the $1 billion general obligation bond that will get the first guideway construction project started. I have voiced my opinion by message to each of the council members. If you who read and comment in this forum feel the same, make your opinion known; don't just blog, ACT.

Daily Horoscope for December 31

Virgo

Someone is being headstrong and wilful, and absolutely determined to do what they want. Mercury is retrograde and it's a Full Moon in Cancer with a lunar eclipse all happening tonight! This could lead to some heated discussions and possibly even rows, as you argue the toss back and forth. It might be best to accept that there's very little possibility of reaching an agreement rather than to get locked in a stubborn battle of wills. Besides, you don't want anything to spoil what promises to be a very enjoyable New Year's Eve. Have fun!
