Rail seems to be on track - Hawaii Editorials

Full story: Honolulu Star-Bulletin

Honolulu's plan for a 20-mile elevated rail transit system between Kapolei and Ala Moana has reached an encouraging benchmark that should provide momentum for the city to break ground on the project by the end of this year.

"The city awaits final federal approval of an environmental impact statement, which is expected to be completed this month."

Got lots of lawyers standing by Mr Mayor? The lawsuits will flow once the EIS is approved...IF it is approved.

I sure wish they would quit comparing this rail project to Phoenix...the two are not even distantly related.

I disagree.

Seems. That is the key. Fact, no cash. Uncle Sam broke and running trillion dollar deficits all over the place.

Every other citizen voted AGAINST the unaffordable, unnecessary extravagant luxury. Even the city's own study said it will NOT alleviate traffic. Only 7 percent is guesstimated to use this planned behemoth. It will also plaster over and result in loss the last open space on the Ewa Plain. AND those billions will make mufi and his friends billionaires. Take from the poor and give it to mufi's cronies.
Mufi: Trying to turn Honolulu into the UGLIEST city in the World.

Getting a rubber stamp from some democrat hacks in DC impressed by mufi's brown-nosing of Barak, does not mean this thing is getting off the ground.

Rail: A bad idea whose time has come.

The guy from Phoenix as well as the other symposium speakers were paid to attend and speak. Does anyone believe that Mufi would bring in speakers who held a a differing opinion about building at grade, or building at all.
Surely the editors at the SB must realize it was a "stacked" syposium so it is surprising they would give so much credibility to it.

Hanneman is smart beginning this thing in an undeveloped area.

By the time citizens and businesses realize it will displace them it will be too late to stop it.

Something has to be done NOW to stop it.

But realize that every group that opposes it disappears.

Mainlanders are packing their bags to come work on this tragedy.

Alot of politicians behind the wall will be making a ton of cash through the construction industry. You can take that to the bank. And guess what, the feds will be waiting for the bust.

There will be plenty of lawsuits to go around if the Final EIS claims that elevated Heavy Rail is the best choice for the environment. The EPA in San Francisco has already noticed that we have not studied the environmental aspects of all the alternatives.
In their comments on our DEIS that ask why we did not study light rail or Bus Rapid Transit in an exclusive right-of-way (both are part of the Fixed Guideway concept).
Since the Hannemann administration never studied these alternatives, they will have a hard time proving they are less desirable from an environmental perspective.

If the City and County was not so damn greedy for kickbacks and contracts to their friends then they might see another avenue for another type of rail system? Tourist love nostalgia and especially the Japanese. Well, we already have a rail system in Ewa Beach and also rail tracks. Expand on that idea with a real Hawaiian rail system. You can adapt that old rail system into the state of the art technology if they must for the local people to get to and from work and still play on the old authentic Hawaiian look. Keep the money here in Hawaii.

You guys will be in shock when you see all the contracts going to the mayors close friends and the mainland companies yet we will be left with the bill for us and our grandchildren for ever. Mark my words, I told you so.

After a generation of holding up and or killing necessary infrastructure improvements from H-3 to the Superferry by the loony left by means of the EIS nonsense its wonderful to see the favor about to be returned here. Maybe there is something to this karma business after all.

Rail = multi-billion dollar white elephant. What is more once this thing gets built it stands to bleed money every year there after. If the train can't make enough money at the fairbox then that tells you people don't want it.

If this rail will be such a profitable winner, why can't they get BANK LOANS! Why because no banker in their right mind would sign on to looser proposal like this light rain.

My car's annual weight tax is my "fare" to drive on our roads - and they charge what it costs.

On the side of Hualalai comes the annoying chirping of the bird making noise. Clueless the Country is in HUGE FINANCIAL DEBT AND CANNOT AFFORD THIS GIVEAWAY.

Plus, not going cover the whole cost, lolo.

Eh, mind your own business. You not paying for this pig.

There is a thousand ways to kill this project, one of them is the EIS and bogging them down with lawsuits.

Another would be possible public official corruption prosecution, although there is an open question as to whether you can prosecute a cave-man.

Funny, but the bulk of the contratcs will be awarded under the next Mayor I think.
Newsflash - we either need to build rail or another freeway. Either way the unions are going to be working. So stop with the kickback claims when you have zero proof. You simply embarissing yourself.
The EIS wont have lawsuits. Thats the whole point of an EIS dummy. Its when you exempt a project from an EIS (H3, SUperferry) that you run into problems..

Daily Horoscope for January 7

Sagittarius

If you have any worries or problems today, a close colleague could have the answers you seek. Work will be satisfying, and anything to do with children should be very rewarding today. There could be friction with a relative, but it's nothing serious and things will sort themselves out in due course. Again, you must pay attention to your health, Saggitarius: skin infections are a strong possibility at the moment.
