Mayor expects jobs with transit plan

The city hopes to attract more local companies to work on its $4 billion mass-transit system by creating smaller contracts, as opposed to larger, $100 million contracts that are typically awarded only to ...

I've signed many a petition in my day but I would feel shame to get near the mass transit killer that is mentioned above...may they become enlightened to the wrongness of their position.

It is long past due that we have a grade separated mass transit system along the primary corridor of our city.

Raising fuel costs and issues such as vog and other pollution demand that we move forward with better ways than the stupid HOV reversible expressways, telecommuting, traffic light retiming or reopening freeways faster after accidents, that is the more or less idiot measures they propose.

Agreed, those are idiot measures. But I think a turbo charged, revamped Bus system will save the day.

Building a train is like using a sledge hammer to kill a termite. Arguing that the train will employ construction workers etc, is shibai. In the long run, the train will bankrupt Honolulu, and destroy Hawaii. Ur argument about jobs, is a temporary money flow, but then after the train pau, no mo jobs.

Who are the well known opponents who spent $20k to try to kill the project? Is it the taxi and tour bus companies?

we are where we are today because city planners fail to paln. if they would fix bottle necks, and have a true cross town hov lane, not one that comes close, move government services out of down town that really don't need to be there. kiss hgea's butt to get blessing from them, then we'll start to move forward.

If you don't know, you haven't been reading the newspapers (until now). They're the same old wed-to-the-car-and-highway coalition -- taxi companies, car dealerships, etc.

People of Oahu, if you are so enthralled with CHANGE you can't stand it, how about changing your love affair with your car? How about some transparency that you want in your national politics? How about thumbs down on deep-pocket private interests who see the transit system as a threat?

Defeating this transit project with the petition drive would solidify Honolulu's place at the top of the "Dumbest Cities on the Planet" list.

The major reason for mass transit is to provide traffic relief on H-1 which Rail will never provide before, during and after Rail is completed.

The traffic choke points are between Pearl City-Pearl Harbor and Middle Street-Downtown Honolulu.

Question: Why is the mayor insisting that the first Rail Segment be from Kapolei to Leeward Community college which won't be completed until the year 2015 which is in a location where there are zero homes and zero commuters?

Question: Shouldn't the mayor build the first Rail segment from Middle street to downtown Honolulu and the second Rail segment from Pearl City to Middle Street?

The Express Busway will remove the two choke points by building a separate, elevated busway from Pearl City to downtown Honolulu.

The Express Busway is a system where a commuter gets on the morning express buses from all major community Bus Transit Centers at Waianae/Makaha, Kapolei/Kalaeloa, Makakilo, Mililani, Haleiwa, Waipahu, Waipio, Pearl City, Aiea, plus 4 to 10 other centers) destined for his/her destination at Pearl Harbor,/Hickam, Airport, Kalihi, Downtown Honolulu and beyond to U.H. Manoa or Ala Moana or Waikiki without transferring even once.

The Express Busway will cost about $800 million.(Tampa built a similar 10 mile Express Busway for $320 million). The Rail will cost $9.0 Billion due to inflation over the 15 years it will take to build the Rail.

Again, Rail not provide Traffic relief!

Mufi's agenda is to get the rail going to get construction jobs. In return, he hopes to get their votes to get re-elected and possibly to a highter office. This is how politicians operate.

Been there and done that. And disgusted.

Rail has to start there beucase thats where the base ayrds are. You then use the eleveted line to move equipment/mateails as you push into town. Now if a large landowner wanted to let the CIty create a baseyard in town, it could start there. Say, like maybe the State!

Go to stoprailnow.com , download the petitin, sign it and mail it in. Stoprailnow will take care of the notary seal. We need to vote and not let the mayor ram it down our throats!

There is a better and cheaper alternative (a separate, elevated Express Busway) to the financially disasterous Rail which will not be funded by the FEDS..the Feds recently rejected the Wash. DC to Dulles Rail project.

Why does the mayor keep lying to us in his press releases and his ads: Rail is NOT going to help our traffic problem. It is going to make it worse for many years. All those things he dismisses "hot lanes...and expanded bus routes" WILL help traffic NOW.

Isn't there some penalty for lying to the people you're supposed to represent. Oh yeah, you vote them out...or impeach them...

"We've been eyeing this project for about 10 years now," said James Fea, vice president of Systra USA, a New Jersey-based company that builds transit systems. "It's the talk of the industry. Everyone wants a piece of it."

After years of planning and political maneuvering, outside businesses and profiteers are finally in position to buy their piece of Hawaii and you are all going to pay dearly for it. Hanneman-Parson's idiotic 5 billion dollar elevated steel rail gamble won't stop people's "love affair" with cars. What a joke! The project isn't designed to really reduce traffic congestion. It is designed to raise taxes, sprawl cheesy new suburbs across the western plains and create profits for investors and developers. Outsiders will flock in to fill most of the jobs and take most of the profits. Benefits to the local economy and workers will be small and short lived. It's all happening fast, and Hawaii will be too late smart.
