Great, at least one public official knows what she is doing. Further, it is a stupid idea to stop the mass transit plan. Wake up Hawaii and smell the coffee.

Seems like Mufi could persuade the city clerk to give it to the voters. That kind of money needs some serious consideration by the folks that will have to pay the bill. I'm not sure who won the contract to build but the media seem to already know what it is going to cost. Odd that the public hasn't been more informed about exactly what is being paid for since they will be expected to foot the bill. I'm curious how many proposals have been considered and just what they are. I understand there is more than one way to skin a rat. Seems like this may not be the paradisiacal solution it is purported to be.

who first raised this issue to the city clerk?

did each side get an opportunity to be heard before the opinion was given?

Whether or not we are for or against rail, it is a sad day when the bureaucracy prevents a measure that would get it on the ballot to let THE PEOPLE decide. If we can't have our kingdom, can't we have democracy?

Wow... I guess Denise De Costa earned her paycheck by listening to her boss and the unions instead of actually doing her job honestly.

And I laugh at the hypocrisy of Mufi Hannemann when he said that it would cost $1.5 million to $2 million to hold a special election.

How much money will it cost to hold a special election if Mufi gets re-elected this year only to "jump ship" in two years to seek higher office?

Liar and a hypocrite... It just keeps getting better.

The incompetence- or evil- of the anti-rail petition just keeps on giving... If and when it does ever pass I suppose the City will just pursue a mag-lev or other non-rail system. And the car- big oil lobby will continue their serpentine logic and squeak away at us.

Anyway, the incompetence- if not outright evil- of the plain ol' Linda Ad may even make this moot, since our very general election in November is in jeopardy or atleast so messed up as to generate false or less than fair results that an efficient, auditable election would. A VEERRYY suspicious situation when you consider the past debacles in Florida (2000) and Ohio (2004) with republican governors; especially in predominately Democratic areas.

People are behind creating jobs, but not through this crappy plan. Billions for a train from Ala Moana to Kapolei? If rail went to the right places, people would probably rally behind it. If the technology wasn't elevated, ugly and noisy, they might go for it. If it meant massive redevelopment in town, where most of the good jobs are, people could see the wisdom in that. If it didn't go hand in hand with further urbanization of the west side, people might go for it. If you want jobs, ask people to subsidize a project that will do a lot of good for Oahu, not make a mess of it.

Whatever adversity by City officials given to SNR and the People, should be met with equal and superior will power to overcome such adversity.

The City officials want to play dirty politics. What else is new in Hawaii?

Adapt, improvise and overcome by holding the Special Election.

In fact, a Special Election will mean that those who seriously oppose rail will be most likely to go out and vote on the matter which, in turn, means a much, much greater likelihood of prevailing on the question.

Though it appears this move by City officials is to stymie the will of the People, it may, in fact, be a blessing in disguise, because it will force a special election where only the most serious and ardent opponents to rail will vote on the matter.

In every cloud there is a silver lining.

SNR and the People should seize this opportunity as yet another opportunity to kill rail now.

Even people outside Oahu are getting taxed for this rail boondoggle, all imports come thru Port of Honolulu, where the tax man gets a cut. I wonder what excuse "they" will use to shoot down the Con-Con vote in November ? Fiddle with the state Constitution , just like they did with the City Charter ?

And the whining begins. Look, the stop rail folks should be kicking themselves because these are their own words on the petition.

"The following question is being submitted to the People of the City and County of Honolulu to be voted upon at a SPECIAL election."

There is no conspiracy or directive from the mayor to the city clerk. SRN screwed it up themselves with their choice of words.

When was this "mistake" discovered, and by whom? Were the stop rail people notifed and given an opportunity to correct it? Sounds like a petty, dirty trick on the part of the administration. If Mufi was as confident as he claims he is about the results of such a vote I'm sure he would find a way to have the issue put on the ballot. Smells like he is not so confident after all. Smells, period!
