Just wondering. With all the people on a crusade to make sure no one's feelings get hurt, I was wondering who still values freedom of speech.

Personally, I value freedom of speech with respect. It doesn't mean the same as being "politically correct". There is a difference between the two. I think humans need to have a sense of diplomacy. Freedom of speech does not mean freedom to put down, insult, call names, curse people out, or disrespect others. It seems like too many people cannot see that fine line between freedom of speech and just plain being ugly and spiteful. Society has lost a sense of consideration for fellow human beings. We have enough problems in society without losing our humanity. Just my opinion...

What ever happened to sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never harm me? People whine to much about this. I understand what you mean Selina but Americans have lost their toughness or should I say thick skin.

It's just my opinion, but I think most people can accept someone saying that they disagree, or even saying, "you're wrong". But to call someone a moron, idiot, retard, or other demeaning names steps over that fine line I mentioned earlier into people's feelings of self-worth. Human beings are headed in a downward spiral morally, ethically, spiritually, politically- in a host of ways. The crime rate is sky high. There is very little politeness in our interactions. There is a general feeling in society that people only need to care about themselves, nobody else's feelings or needs matter. I might be "old school", but I still prefer to have positive interactions with people than negative ones. I always try to stay positive if I can, neutral if need be, and negative only as a last resort. That's just how I am. There's also a saying that you get more bees with honey than with vinegar. I rather leave people with a good impression of me than a bad one. Again- just my opinion. Snidley, I have to say, this is a very intriguing, thought-provoking topic...It's a good one... Thanks! I'm surprised there haven't been more responses.

I believe in feedom of speech, being able to express my opinion and having others agree with, disagree with, even dispute my opinion. What I do not believe in is the abuse of that freedom to gossip and say slanderous things - taking pot shots in an anonymous forum is a direct abuse of that freedom. Debate is a terrific thing if it is void of childish immaturity.
