'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' presents new home to KCK family
“It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen”
Flanked by thousands -- fellow Marines plus a crush of family, friends and other well-wishers -- Iraq war veteran Daniel Gilyeat took his first steps into his family's new home Saturday.
Gilyeat repeatedly wiped away tears as he talked with Ty Pennington, host of 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.' The Kansas City, Kan., man who lost a leg in the war mouthed 'thank you' to the crowd. He let loose with a barrage of the Marine 'ooh-rah' call, a sentiment echoed back by the crowd and, particularly, the other Marines on hand. Read more

Has anyone ever gone back to see if the people who have received these great houses have sold all the stuff and trashed the houses?

Not being a regular follower of the show, I have never been more impressed than with Daniel Gilyeat. He has restored my faith in what a man is. A tremendous father, a marine, and what it means to be a man. I wish him and his family all the best and I would be honored to meet him.

I really like the intent behind this show, even more so when it is a deserving vet such as this guy. I've heard that some of the houses result in massive taxes due to home improvements, etc..., but not sure.
But, and this is only in the one case I can speak on, the show/home in Hawaii was a fiasco. Yes, they were a couple who has a worthy charity. But, and this really created some heartburn in some circles of Hawaii, that same couple also earned in excess of $200k annually combined. By taking the acerage they owned, and building the development center they did, it was a good thing. By combining the center with a new home for the couple, it created some serious concerns. So many couples, equally deserving but with much less annual income, were left off the list to be considered. I guess the allure was the charity work they did, and it makes good TV. But it certainly got some local's in an uproar. |

anyone know the reason his ex wife left the 4 kids? I find that odd.

Your cousin ROCKS! My husband and I really support the troops and everything they stand for! How selfless were his acts of bravery, nobility and honor! We adored the Extreme Makeover show with Daniel and good riddance to the wife that left him! She didn't have a fraction of honor in her fabric! I'm glad that the liberal media gave him the reverance that Daniel deserved...he' a great American, soldier and humanitarian! Corpus Christi, Texas

I am thinking he is to PROUD and THANKFUL for this wonderful gift he has been given to trash it. He wasts the best for his children and he has his own safe haven.....his 'garage' to go to...he will not trash that. Daniel seems as though he is a loving, compassionate, caring, thoughtful, kind person along with being a immacullate father to his children. They have a bond that will NEVER be broken much like that of him and his brothers...'Semper Fi'.
Thanks for everything you have put your life on the line for.....it is greatly appreciated!!!! My daughter has Down Syndrome and loves to write the Soldiers overseas and wounded at Walter Reed. She would love to write you and your children to thank you for all you have done and all that you do.... We can be contacted at mykidzandme@gmail.com -- She would love to write some of the soldiers your visit also...you let us know. THANKS AGAIN!!:-)

I think it is great that Daniel got a new home but come on folks- this is TV! I googled to find out about the wife.(Wasn't too hard!) She lives within walking distance and two of the children actually live with her. It appears there were lots of problem even before he was tragically injured. Before anyone throws stones they should remember there is always two sides. That stated! God Bless you Daniel and all the other soldiers who continue to fight for our country! |

I wonder if EHM has reviewed my application?
So what if it's a foreign country. I'm still an American. |

Well, if you're like me, when people post negative comments you want to see where they go their info since they obviously cannot find happiness in someone else's joy and only want to tear it down...MPiro got his/hers from here http://www.leatherneck.com/forums/archive/ind...
So Daniel's ex-wife SAYS two of the children live with her. I find it funny that she has a five-bedroom house with her NEW husband and ANY of her children are NOT living with her. Typical of that type of woman to say she is "MYSTIFIED" as to why he was chosen. I have more than one friend in Iraq. One has died. Two of them received their divorce papers WHILE they were IN Iraq. One of them received his as soon as he came home from a woman who told him she only stayed with him while he was there because of the extra money she got (they get more money while over there). Which also begs to wonder how Gilyeat's wife ran up so much in debt since she would have been the one getting his military pay. Did she not have a job? You say that in your post on the other board that this TV for you, but it was probably better to leave her out of it all together and I'm sure she chose to not be in it because I'm sure she would get asbolutely NO sympathy from ANYONE. Since the show was about the Gilyeat family and their new home she has no place in it regardless of why she left her husband and children. Congrats on your new home Gilyeats! You deserve it! |
|
Just to make sure you understand.! Nothing negative was said about Daniel Gilyeat and his children. I agree he deserve it and so do his wonderful children! Wish every vet could get their full compensation too! Just pointing out- watch any reality tv show.(Which I love to watch) and know there is always more than you see or hear but I guess it wouldn't be good tv if it wasn't. |
|
I too find it odd that this woman left four children and a supposedly perfect man. I'd like to hear her side of the story. |

I commend you Daniel and all you have done!! OOrah! I am a teacher Assistant at a special Ed school in Md. and would love to know if you do motivational speaking...Teachers and our "BDP" students would get alot from your perseverence and "Zen" attitude! bussinks@calvertnet.k12.md.us contact if you wish. OORAH! Keep the faith!

According to the show becasue she couldn't take the pressure. I think that when you marry someone and have kids you marry for better or worse. She left him when he probly needed her the most. I bet now that he has a nice house she's probly kicking her self for it and might "reconsider" her decision of leaving him.... |

IF THAT'S THE BEST COMMENT YOU COULD MAKE THE,SHAME ON YOU LADY! |
|
I appreciate what you have done for our freedom. Thanks Daniel, you deserve the extreme makeover home. Every military vet that comes back messed up from the war deserves an extreme makeover home. Our country needs to reward them with such and also pay all their medical bills and give them a monthly check for the rest of their lives. I'm ashamed of the way America currently treats our military when they come back all messed up from the war.
