James Little's "Governor must stop games" is just hogwash. Lingle has the welfare of the workers at heart in instituting furloughs instead of massive layoffsby spreading the heavy burden to thousands of state workers by furloughs instead of layoffs and so makes everyone to keep their job. he stupidity of the state workers in going to court to stop the furloughs will now result in many state workers getting laid off. Other states such as Illinois have bigger shortfalls and are doing what Lingle has done. Stop all this nonsense attacking Lingle. THE STATE OF HAWAII DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO PAY FOR THE SALARIES OF ALL WORKERS.Period.

I am writing to say how sad I am that the wonderful hotel...Ilikai is closing.
Two years ago I stayed there with a grandchild. We had a great visit.
It's a terrible shame to see it go!
Good luck to all the employees and to the condo-owners there.
I hope somehow it can be saved and again be a landmark for Honolulu.
Hawaii Five O...was a favorite show and I could imagine...Danno...is NOT PLEASED!

I agree with Kirkland that Gov Lingle's furlough plan was in the best interest of all the state workers. This is truly a no-brainer ... hmmmm, would I rather take three days of furlough a month and still have a job and benefits? Or, would I rather be laid off, collect unemployment benefits, and try to find a job? Will I be able to pay my mortgage with my unemployment check? The state workers have complained so much about this no-brainer issue, and Gov Lingle has been criticized for what she thought could save many of you the traumatic experience of being laid off. She has been very patient with this. People of Hawaii -- wake up!!!

its not even the Governors job to balance the budget. its the legislators. but all they did was give themselves a raise and go home.

Surely you jest! Past and present democrat legislators, in the pockets of unions, with their tax and spend mentality is what got us in this mess. They continually put all the States eggs in the same basket, tourism, and now look. This state has been continually ranked at the bottom of the barrel in business-friendly states. Rather than forward vision and creating a state where a business might want to locate, the legislators with their "good ole boy" mentality didn't want to rock "special interest" boat. The world-wide economy tanked and along with it tourism. So, for goodness sake, get your head out of your democrat a** and start to realize that it's not a republican problem. It's a people problem.

Everyone in the USA has access to FREE medical care NOW. No one can be turned down. What you want is to add the cost of insurance to that already very expensive program...I say we don't need it, the system is NOT broke...the only reason it is a crisis is because the Democrats SAY it is. If you truely want substandard care stay the course of Government Insurance...they can't even run the VA right and You want them to have the whole ball of wax?...Please get informed before this uber expensive white elephant becomes law....

good point. if your lose hours, overtime starts earlier. so instead of working 40 hours, than overtime, now its 32 or less hours, than overtime. What a deal, state workers should check this out, that will cause more overtime for all workers. good LL and her support whiners, now taxes will go up for sure.

campaign on a whimsical set of ideas
that tourism will be back soon.
Unemployment in Hawaii will hit 12%
this year and the Excise Tax will be
on the table since there is nowhere
else to go. The worst is yet to come.

I agree..Hawaii lacks any vision or leadership. Truth is, governmetn and services will shrink with the tax base. HTA, led by an old democratic party hack, is irrelevant. No one here has a clue how to bring tourism back. Truth is, it will never come back

Frankie Kam. That's part of the problem, we aren't getting 37 hours of work out of our workers, if we were, we wouldn't need so many of them. When they work on "cruise" you need more to do the same amount of work. I suspect that 50% of the workers are doing 90% of the work. The other 50% struggle to finish the remaining 10%.

There is plenty of "Stupid" from all parties in our handling of the State's budget.

May I ask the writer to let us know what the naturopath (N.D.'s) bill is about...no explanation was given. SB420 only says PARENTERAL(?). Would you explain what that means...I was taken aback on their wanting to change the law to give Temporary Licenses to N.D.'s coming into Hawaii during Public Emergencies. Sounds like a rare occurrence.

If N.D's are the expert herb, homeopathic, and botanical medicine doctors, not to mention that they deliver babies, perform minor surgery, provide natural psychological therapy, prescribe supplements, etc., how come the medical doctors (M.D.'s) are prescribing the herb marijuana, when clearly the N.D.'s are the physicians educated in this field of expertise.

M.D.'s prescribe petro-chemical drugs and lack adequate training in herbal medicine. I do not smoke marijuana for any reason however for those that need it for health reasons it should be prescribed by those properly trained and licensed.

Highly competent physicians both N.D.'s and M.D's should endeavor to reduce the cause for the need of and use of any prescription; not promote a health problem and its medication for the rest of ones life. Petrochemical medicines are mostly carcinogenic and too many destroy people's organs.

It's only reasonable that we charge the N.D's w/ the responsibility they are already licensed for in their scope of practice.

The governor is playing games? How about the public worker's unions? No formal proposals on the table. Just "informal" talks. Are they serious or not? Next year is an election year and whatever the unions can do to make the current administration look bad, they are doing to set the stage for their paid political candidates running for state office next year. They have total disregard for the welfare of their members. I don't believe any public worker union officials are losing pay, being furloughed or layed off (except for those already in jail). Its all about politics and the games have just begun.

Go back and re-read James' letter....
Except this time, substitute the word "Lingle", with the "Unions".

What games? Have the Unions place an offer on the table? Who is playing the games. Governor choose to face reality, the Unions and the Mayors continue to cross their fingers and hope. For once we have an elected official in Hawaii looking out for the "rest of us" who can't run commercials telling everyone how hard they are working or handing out cards threatening businsesses that they won't spend unless they support raises taxes. Thanks Governor Linge, Four More Years!

every day the news gets worse, regarding hawaii and it's exuberant taxing. the administration taxes business, people, and everything else they want to get their hands into that is why business pull out big and small. hawaii is not a place to make a business grow because the state will tax you out of your business and home. get those leaders out they already did so much damage to the people of hawaii, the children of hawaii and have disrupted our rights of having a decent life.
