"But we should not feel defeated"
I'm sorry but I feel defeated. I am sick to death of this stupid country that allows my rights to be put up for a popular vote. I am sick of a party with a leader who will not lift his voice against those who demean us. "Soundly defeated a referendum" in Washington? Who's stats is she reading? Equality is equality. We don't have it. We're not getting it. |

1 The Civil Rights movement in the middle of the 20th Century lasted over a decade. The struggle to secure voting and other rights for women has lasted more than a century. It took the better part of five hundred years in some places for Catholics to win equality with other Christian faiths. The struggle for equality is a long, arduous, and painful climb. |

And I am begining tof wonder if that was the best thing to do, considering the abuse and their stance on rights. |

I think it's time to remind them of what it use to be like for them. |

Thank you Sei. You are, of course, right. But I'm getting old and it makes me so mad, my "husband" is wondering why I am shouting and so angry. We voted for the Democrats to get out from under the Republican poop, but so far they are not speaking up for us. Especially the President. Can't he mouth the words,'Vote No On 1" His own church blesses same sex marriages but he cannot retract his statement that he is not in favor of SSM. What's with that? I don't get it. I think the Democrats, while they are in power, should do everything they can to secure our legal rights. They are doing nothing. |

They are afraid. People like Sarah Palin and her followers have been bullying the political establishment for so long that it is making people cower when it comes to making real change in the country. In New York 23, Palin's crew forced a social liberal out of the race. A Democrat now represents a district that hasn't voted for one since before the Civil War. It is time for us in the LGBT community to have a clear message, and it is time for liberals to have one as well. I just hope it happens before it is too late. |

They passed, and Obama signed the Matthew Shepard/James Byrd Hate Crimes Act. Which is to say they have done more for us than any Congress/President in history. I believe ENDA, and DADT repeal will both be passed in the next three years. We need to keep the pressure up of course. These three things would be a HUGE step forward for us. Repeal of DOMA I'm a bit less sure of. We gained marriage equality in several states, and several more seem like they may be on the verge. There is much work to be done, we cannot feel defeated over Maine (although I must admit, I was devestated). Think of the progress we've made, and the work still to be done. |

I am almost 65, and my husband also wonders about my involvement in the same-sex marriage issue, and politics in general. He tells me that it just angers me, and I should just avoid it, cause by the time it comes about (and it will), we will probably be to old to care, or we will be dead. I remind him that I have been involved in civil rights issues for over 40 years now (which is longer than I have known him), and that my fight is not just for he and I, but for the other millions that are and will be affected. He just shrugs his shoulders, and goes back to his book. Similing, I might add. |
