The last haul - Hawaii Business

Too late to bring back the SuperFerry, the baga gone and so is the kala that it would have bring and jobs. But I guess the people has all the answer on how too save their island. I grew up on plantation land and worked at Kahuku Sugar, went to war and came back and the plantation closed. My dad worked there 45yrs and couldn't retired. So here Iam on the big island of America and it take 2 weeks to go around this island. The grass is green and the leipo is red and gray like home, but we have the 4 season. Oh yes did I mention its alot cheaper up here. The people don't have any aloha till they know you're from Hawaii. Mahalo Braddah Eric for the pa'akai:-)! Aloha Kauai, malama pono a hui hou.

Sorry to see this business go and especially that there was no way to stop the losses and somehow make a profit. Sugar has not gone down in price.

Aloha Mokebla, I was born in Kahuku in 1956 my Grandfather was plantation Manager until the mill closed in early 70's. I have so many fond memories of growing up in Kahuku.

Well, no alternative fuel gonna be made in HI now, guess the water infrastructure will rot out too. So much for farmers, lack of vision and bad government continues.

This is another sad day for Hawaii and yet, the dignity of the people prevail. These are good people who worked hard for a living and when the end came, they held their heads high.

agreed. that is what hawaiians are good for.

As a first time tourist to the Big Island, I was always facinated by the cane trucks, the burning and the work that went on.
i was a beef farmer in Virginia at that time.
I liked those scenes.
Gone but not forgotten.

Lets hope that development is not built on this land where so many people toiled in the hot sun.

I guess it's time for the new golf course and high income housing to make their debut on the land.

I hope and pray that no big golf course or big development takes over!! When we wipe out all the farmers, were do we get the food!! We have to go to other countries to rely for our food, because we wipe out our family farmers!! Shame on our us, we think we need big and fancy things, it doesn't satisfy like the traditional things in life.

Hawaiians did not want to work in sugar production. Thats why your asian relative came here. Are you still working in a bar? Whats your job called? Let me take a guess " under da table pacifier" or "maybe dancin fo dollars hostess". Can't get too many jobs without that green card huh.

I love what your saying, Hawaiians didn't have a choice, because there is not enough jobs. They are most hard working people that I met, while I was there for 20 days. I miss it so much and wish I could move there permanently, they are the most genuine/true people I have ever met!!

I had an uncle who once told me that one day I would have to show my grand kids a picture of what sugar cane and pineapple fields looked like. I took it as a joke at that time but I guess he was right sugar cane is gone and if not for Dole Co. pineapple would be a thing of the past.
