Fraud suspect faces $1M bail - News

Ms Shaw shouldn't be allowed any bail instead she should be remanded due to the fact that she might use some else's credit card or two or three to make the $1,000,000.00 bail; she's one dangerous wahine, no remorse, no bail.

Somehow I have a feeling drugs could play a part in this story. Addiction drives people to steal and spurs identity theft to garner enough money to feed a out of control habit. Although not mentioned as of the breaking of this story I would not be surprised if it does surface. Prosecuters will seek a 20 year sentence if found guilty is warranted but with the court system being so lenient probably will not happen. This type of crime is really easy to do and as we see takes awhile to catch the perps.

Hate to say it but if she was REALLY smart, she would have used the credit cards to take out cold, hard cash and then hidden the money somewhere.

Then, when she got caught, she could clam up and claim she spent all the cash and there probably wouldn't be any way for the authorities to find it.

After she does jail time, she can come back to the cash and yippee!!! It's payday!!

But she was an idiot and spent it all.

I thought that we already did that - along with waterboarding and all. Also, it's obvious that she will get some time, but 20 to life is ridiculous. In comparison to Bernie Madoff and Dick Cheney, she isn't anybody that we'll even remember a few years from now.

State court? Time served. Maybe a couple years, but she was a good person, a loving wife, and supported the travel industry in a time when it was doing poorly. This was small potatoes. Why don't they go after big criminals? Oh wait...that would be their friends.

hey smart one with a great idea: even if she did follow your mastermind plan. she is not going to get out of jail alive. she will die in the prison of old age. not such a great idea

I dont think she will get life in prison..probably out on parole after maybe 10 or 15 years..the courts dont usually give out life sentences for that kind of crime.

Spoiled Susan Shaw, former Miss Hawaii, will get no punishment for stealing hundreds of IDs and ruining hundreds of lives. Isn't she the 3rd Miss Hawaii to turn to a life of crime. She is an excellent teacher, yes no need to go to school or follow laws is the way to live a life of luxury by crime. A lesson to every little girl to follow. Don't listen to your parents or school officials, run from the cops, and travel the world in luxury, after all she is pretty and Miss Hawaii. Pretty people don't belong in prison, send the big and ugly to jail, the American way.

I'll say again that this series of crimes was aided and abetted by the very fact that HPD allowed further people to be victimized the longer they let this activity play out from the time they actually had enough evidence to arrest the woman. And that was in the first few weeks, if not the first few days, that they received the first complaint.
When the priority is to make a case where you can put the criminal away for the longest time, regardless of the harm being done to the victims needed as part of the process, then all of us as potential victims are not being served by this overkill tactic that takes such criminals off the street one by one at very long time intervals.

Susan Shaw stole hundreds of IDs and ruined hundreds of lives but is she really Susan Shaw. Maybe she is Subaba Mcbuckby! She live a life of luxury and was spoiled so this Miss Hawaii committed crimes in a massive way. Since she will get no punishment let her go to continue her crime spree and keep HPD on their toes, like a training lesson. We cannot have our prisons filled with Miss Hawaiis. Let her go so she can teach all our little girls to live the life of luxury by committing crimes. Poor spoiled rich girl, no punishment for her, just a new diamond ring she got from stealing another ID, maybe yours next. Forgive her, she is just another Miss Hawaii and spoiled rotten.

Her face is familiar, wasn't she arrested before? I guess she is a career criminal who lived in luxury all her life and former Miss Hawaii. How do you expect this spoiled rich girl to continue her luxury life style if she doesn't steal your ID? Let her go so she can continue her crime spree and teach our little girls to turn to a life of crime. Mabye her crime spree will stimulate our economy.

Susan Shaw is just trying to bailout our economy by stealing IDs and using your money to prop up our stores. So what she stole millions of dollars of your money. She will get no punishment because she was Miss Hawaii and a spoiled brat. A career criminal like her is an example to our little girls to live a life of luxury by stealing. She makes a good teacher. She can call herself a financial adviser. Poor thing, maybe her rich husband forgot to give her the million dollar weekly allowance, is that spouse abuse. She's just spoiled, let her go.

Forgive me, I was raised by rich parents and sent to the best schools but they spoiled me so its not my fault I turned to crime for the easy luxury life. My husband is super rich and he forgot to give me my $million weekly allowance.

Yes she deserves life, but so do child molesters and rapists and murderers. They're more deserving of a life sentence but how many of them get life? If your going to sentence her to life make sure to do the same to people even more deserving of a life sentence instead of sentencing them to 10 years which they will probably serve 3.

Why do i get the feeling the prosecuter's office is trying to make themselves look good by announcing they'll be seeking a life sentence when they know they probably will never get it.

You’re assuming Van Marter can convince a judge to sentence her to life. Watch her get off on a couple charges, then sentenced to three 20-year terms to be served concurrently (at the same time). Assuming the parole board gives “Miss Hawai‘i International 1992” a minimum three years per term, she could be out in six years.

Her husband saw all this going on and did not suspect anything was not right? Gimme a break. He's probably in on it too. I don't know if life in prison is too harsh of a punishment but she needs to spend a lot of time in jail where she cannot rip off anyone and ruin anyone else's lives.
