Ethics issues could block private hiring of furloughed teachers...

The Parents/Teachers could just do what our Politicians do all the time. Just ignore the ethics opinions.

Let me get this straight. Paying teachers privately could result in an ethics problem, but other staff showing up and taking money when there are no kids in the school IS ethical. What an odd sense of ethics the BOE has...

Eh, no give up.

Just because they give you one "opinion" or piece of paper that says "no can" does NOT mean that the opinion or the piece of paper is correct.

After all, it's merely an opinion, not an Order issued by a Court.

I would hazard the guess that the DOE will be way too busy trying to stay afloat, to have the time, energy or resources, to putting together a TRO petition or Preliminary Injunction kine stuffs, just to make themselves look bad.

Go for it.

Actually, the ethics question was with regard to a teacher "tutoring" the same students he/she teaches during a regular school day. Because he/she gives the grades to the students, working with them outside of regular school, on normal school studies, would be a conflict of interest.

The implication being that if the teachers were not teaching their own students, it may be deemed ethical.

So, it can be done, just make sure the students you are tutoring are not the ones you give grades to.

The Ethics commission is in violation of ethics issues and should be investigate by the ethics commission or maybe they all should go to the nut house?

Ethics issues are important in education if not in business or government. Teachers usually have higher ethical standards than those in the business world or the political world. Violation of ethics rules can cost teachers their jobs.

However, perhaps your suggestion will work.

I can just see the PTSA of Kailua paying for furloughed teachers at, say, Aikahi Elementary to tutor the students attending, say, Princess Kaiulani Elementary in Kalihi.

Here you get a glimpse of the dark heart of unionized teaching. It is ALWAYS about the teacher and never about the students.

Commend the PTSAs for looking into this option; however, what are considerations for those families that might not be able to afford the extra $25 a day? If their kids aren't able to attend, will they be stigmatized by other students? Are there any plans to subsidize the cost to families so all can attend?

Rather than pay $25 per furlough, wouldn't it be better to just pay an extra .5 or 1% in the GE tax, and then everyone can help pay to put the teachers back on the job? Those who don't have kids in school, don't feel like "why should I have to pay", because you benefit from other services that taxpayers with children pay for as well. We all in this together.

This post is right on the money. I am not worried about children whose parents can afford to pay extra - I have two children in public school myself and think it is unfair if I can pay extra and get my children taught while other families cannot pay and are also put in a huge employment bind because of the child care issue.

Our present situation is an indication of a sickness in our society.

We need a solution that will take care of all the children. The Governor has failed them, a fact that Marie Laderta seems proud of (she applauds DOE and the BOE for their actions). The legislators have also failed by not coming back into session and dealing with the difficult revenue issues.

In addition to raising the GET, we need to end corporate welfare, in the form of the technology tax credit. Some people have been feeding off that trough for years....

The problem of ethics is not at the teacher level regarding teachers and parents teaming up to problem-solve.

The problem of ethics is in the core belief of the DOE/BOE/HSTA/HGEA/UPW that parents should have no voice or power in times of crisis. Where are the concerns of the children?

Adults are dragging their interests into the kids' world.

This is a great idea. Having teachers as furlough Friday instructors is awesome. This is the way to create a workable solution out of a bad situation.

The ethics opinion is just that, an opinion. Unless someone makes it an issue it an issue (ie lawsuit, etc.) it won't be an issue. If people can remember to keep the greater good in mind and not their own special interest, our children will be fine.

Our teachers need to stay on the job and show their commitment to teaching. What is wrong with our teachers. I would never desert the classroom. What a pathetic bunch our so-called teachers are

Thus the ethics opinion. Unless it's free, ergo available to all, then teachers tutoring these students on Friday and then giving them grades for other 4 days a week can result in inequitable grading. The ones who can afford it will progress, and the ones who can't won't.

I'm assuming they would have to hold the tutoring someplace other than the school campus, since businesses are not allowed to freely use school facilities. Also, they would have to use their own materials.

Do you work for free? If so, good for you. However, most people work for pay. You should not be namecalling teachers if they won't work for free. Besides, I believe that the teachers will not be allowed in the classroom on their furlough days.
